How to highlight and take notes in PDFs

Is note taking and highlighting only available using the epub file?
It seems like my sideloaded pdf files can't do it.

Does anyone know?

Thanks

Here is a quick summary of what you can do with non-DRM'ed side-loaded PDF's. It is disappointing. I have converted some PDF's to EPUB's in order to get better functionality. Hopefully they will add these features in a firmware update. Many PDF's don't convert well to EPUB.

PDF's viewed in Quickoffice:
Not searchable; can be portrait or landscape; pinch-zoom or use +/- signs like web browser; change pages by swipe up or down; shows file name on top bar across screen; no table of contents; no bookmarks; no annotations; no dictionary; does not remember last page read

That's odd because when I used the old nook, the black and white one, it did remember the last page read even on non drm side loaded books.

But I do agree with you that it is a pretty said state of affairs when it comes to pdf support as it is now. In fact as you mentioned, many Pdf documents don't convert well into spin formats.

Thanks for sharing.

It's because the NOOKcolor has a special QuickOffice viewer for PDF's without DRM. If you sideload a DRM'ed PDF then it opens in the regular Book Viewer and you have the additional features below:

PDF's viewed in the Book Reader:
Searchable; no landscape; can select text font size but can't change background theme color; change pages by swipe left or right (or tap); shows book name on top bar across screen; table of contents viewable; bookmarks with selectable list; no annotations; no dictionary; remembers last page read

It would be nice if you could select whether a PDF opened in the Book Viewer or Quick Office. Here is an old thread with a similar discussion that may interest you.

I'm disappointed in the PDF viewer on the NC... I can't believe they couldn't get a proper Adobe product in there. Some materials I've sideloaded are designed to display without a watermark on updates Adobe readers... on this third-party viewer, that means watermarks everywhere.

You can download Adobe Reader onto the Nook (if rooted).
