As a Mac user whose Wine install is often semi-functional at best for the apps I want to use, I feel your pain.

But you can always run the original python scripts/widgets directly, which is what I used to do before some very nice people packaged them up into a convenient 1-step AppleScript droplet.

I am not smart enough to use Linux in the CLI that well other than some copy and paste. So far I am a GUI Ubuntu user. LOL

Well, even if the CLI is not your thing, the widgets are practically pure point and click. Just launch them and follow the instructions by pressing the handily labeled buttons.

A couple of tools might still require command-line skills or compatible OS to get the most out of them, but all the really important stuff is now cross-platform widgetized for convenience.

Why strip the DRM anyway? It seems like Amazon is playing fair with us. You and your wife can both read your books as it is. Amazon keeps a library of the books you buy so you don't need backups. Amazon is not like some other online retailers (whose name I shall not mention to avoid flaming) that trash your purchased content when they send you an iOS upgrade, even if you always played their tune, and refuse to let you re-download your old stuff from their site.

Amazon keeps track of what you've bought and if you wipe it out you can download it again. You can de-authorize devices and authorize a new device--cell phone or Kindle, PC or whatever--and download old books you want to re-read on the new technology.

Personally, I can't think of a reason to strip DRM from Kindle books.

What am I looking for in a widget/script? I am not sure what I am looking for. The reason I am looking into DRM removal is simply to learn how it is done. It is not that I need to remove the DRM for any reason. Like you said books purchased through Amazon can be loaded on many devices.

That's great. Because it really should be a personal thing.

Technology changes and nothing lasts forever. Not to mention; "a fool and his online-data are easily parted." But do what works for you.

Personally I like the idea that I can change e-readers and move my library without any worries. Because I bought the books and should be able to read them on any device that I want. Because I want to be able to mess with the meta data so that the books are easier for me to find on my Kindle.

Mainly because I think DRM is silly and I don't like that the Publishers want to control where I read the books that I buy.

so as to be able to fix typos, grammar errors, bad layout... lack of table of contents / ability to skip chapters....

that's 4 reasons to be going on with.

personally, I also strip annoying sneak peek extracts of other books, dedications to people I've never heard of, lists of other books by the same author ( if I need that I'll google it... )

Well that seems a tad extreme to me, but hey... it's your book (or should be anyway).

Just out of curiosity, do you remove forewords, afterwords and appendices, as well?

i usually remove everything I thought was irrelevant, after finishing a book, so that if/ when I reread there'e no crap to fast forward through, and no junk at the end to confuse the progress % complete indicator. I hate finding that the story is over, at 77% complete!

it varies from book to book, If I didn't like it & will definitely never re-read then no point removing anything!

PS dvds get the same treatment - I want to re-watch only the book/movie & nothing else

lets be honest, when was the last time you read an interesting acknowlegements chapter ???, or enjoyed watching a bunch of animated corporate logos

Corporate logos?... yeah, I'm not really interested. But I've always enjoyed reading every single word of a book.... including acknowledgements, dedications, dramatis personae, and previews of coming novels.

and you'd read them all again - 2nd time around ? wow.
do you also read the entire index, if there is one ???

actually there's also a satisfaction to be gotten from fine tuning the look & feel of an ebook & from mastering the necessary skills. - and the complete original is always there on Amazon servers, as a backup.

I like a tad more space between paragraphs than the amazon default, and I like being able to change the cover art, if the Kindle version is naff compared with say the hardback version.

Plus I like having my own backup library & not just relying on Amazon & my ISP to always be there when needed.

unless you blunder & delete archive stuff via the manage my kindle page.
IF you do that then they cannot /will not replace it, I did that with the free oxford american dictionary & had a hell of a job to get that back for use in my kindle for PC ( involving opening new amazon accounts, drm stripping... )

I forgot to mention that I don't re-read books. Or I should say "can't" re-read books. I try occasionally, but it never works out.
