505 just arrived!

Well, I done went and done it, I bought a 505. It arrived this morning and I just opened the box.

The first thing I noticed made me say:

" oh, huh, wow That isn't a TAN cover..."

Every description I read of the 505 said it came with a tan cover (both the silver and the blue) or didn't specify at all ("soft cover") and I was really looking forward to the tan cover (I use the light brown cover on my 500 now) but my 505 came with a Blue(ish?) cover (it IS the blue 505).
I hope at least that a tan/brown cover is available from someone soon.

The second thing I noticed made me say:

" WOW, huh, That is one bright clear screen...."

And it is, I am really looking forward to getting some books on here and reading them.

The third (and final) thing I noticed made me say:

"Hey they were not kidding, it really doesn't come with a charger..."

I wonder if my 500 charger will work on it? USB is great, but I have SOO many things that use USB to charge I dont have enough ports to charge them all <grin>

Does anyone know where I can get a flimsy, thin standard looking brown or tan cover for the 505?

OK off to activate and start using my new 505!

So, the answer is YES, you can charge the 505 with the 500's charger.

Second, take a look at this guy:

Although I think a powered USB hub would do just as well. You wouldn't need to even hook it to a PC... just power it on and plug stuff in, that should charge it.

Just got a 505 (with the dark cover) and love it. Check out https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19210 for covers. I ordered both the Sony covers and will post pictures and comments after I get them

You can also charge with a PSP charger if you're looking for an inexpensive backup.

Now THAT is useful information... ONE LESS charger I have to carry around with me all the time!

Thanks!

I'll have to see if I can find the box for it, but I found this "octopus" type cable from Fry's in Denver. It plugs into a regular USB port on one end, and the other ends have a PSP power connector (and thus Sony PRS-50x), mini-usb, iPod, and a couple others. Very handy when traveling. I just plug it into my laptop and can use the one cable for just about everything. Very handy.

It was less then $10.

Yes, if you find a model or part number let me know, that is exactly something I need!

Here is a link to Fry's website for that cable I was talking about:

I have used it for mini-usb, iPod, e-reader. Worked fine.

As a matter of fact I am in possession of not one, but two spare brown 505 covers. I purchased a leather cover (spare #1) and received another (spare #2) when Sony replaced my broken unit. I'd be glad to send you one. PM me with your earth address and I'll send one off to you.

I just got my 505 today and I've spent all evening playing with it. I'm using a regular old USB to mini cable that I also use for my Motorola Q cell phone - seems to work fine and it charges just fine.

(One note of worth is that, even for those of us with too many devices, I don't expect to be charging the 505 on a daily or even weekly basis. So disconnecting my cell phone for a bit to charge the 505 is not going to be an issue.)

I already have libprs500 installed, have purchased half a dozen books from www.webscription.net (downloaded them in MS Reader LIT format) and converted them over.

Now I'm heading off to bed to go do a spot of light reading.
