I am back on Discworld. Knee deep in The Last Continent and loving it. I think it is book 22 or 23. Jingo sort of put me off them for a few weeks, but in this one, Pratchett seems to get back to the funny.

I read Day of the Triffids last year. First time in print, though I'd seen the old UK video series, and listened to an old UK radio series. I also read Night of the Triffids by Simon Clark, which turned out to be a rotten sequel. Since the book is set 25 years later, most people are sighted, so the danger of the triffids was ratcheted up by having them evolve in different ways. Frankly ludicrous ways, several times.

Finished off Band Of Brothers about a week ago. Halfway through Jo Walton's Among Others. Definitely a book to carefully read, as some significant context switches happen with little warning.
Haven't picked my next historical book, going to be hard to top that last one. |

After spending a few months with the classics (Henry James, Joseph Conrad, Herman Melville) I needed a break - and turned to thrillers for something completely different.
Just finished "Heartsick" by Chelsea Cain - touted as the worthy successor to the Hannibal Lector/Clarice pairing - and I have to agree. A fresh entry into the serial killer genre - with a truly fascinating totally evil psychopathic intelligent female serial killer. And a battered cop that may or may not be able to cope with her. |

I've just finished "Lest Darkness Fall" by Sprague de Camp. Excellent time travelling story of an American from 1930 who gets sent back in time to Italy in the year 550 A.D. and tries to prevent the coming of the Dark Ages (lest darkness fall). Funny and well researched.

I'm really enjoying The Autobiography of Mark Twain (though I admit I skipped the 200 page "introduction"). It's like sitting down for a chat with the old guy - and sometimes he sounds so much like my father! Especially with all the weird stuff going on in the news lately, I just felt so good after reading his little dissertation on how the "latest big news story that everyone is all concerned with" will be forgotten in a mere three months so no point getting too agitated about it at the time.
I think I'm going to have to add both Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn to my TBR pile. Reading Twain's autobiography makes me realize how little I have read of his. I think I may have missed something. |

I tried to read Tom Sawyer recently and was not very impressed. I guess I should try again...
