I'd love to get solar panels, but am not prepared to give them my arm and my leg for them...

We've a government that talks a lot about green energy, but making solar panels affordable is too much... And our house is close to perfect for it, a clear view from south east to west all year round, on a roof that's 15m long.

Ridiculous weather here last night! TWO "take cover" tornado warnings in one hour's time, me worrying about my kitties alone at my house while holding a pillow on my poor sore stomach to keep the dog from jumping on me and corraling my mother to the safety of the hall. All is well, but sheesh. Enough. I want my life back. Probably should have put this in vent and rant.

We had continuous thunderstorms for about 4 hours last night. My drive home was nightmarish (the storms hit at evening rush hour). Not much wind but LOTS of lightning - lost my Internet access but not electricity. Goldie cat cowered under the raised footrest on my recliner - it's her "safe" place to hide during storms. Sammy cat slept through the entire thing.

Photovoltaic is getting better and more efficient all the time. We also have many and improved ways to store and transport electricity -- including dumping it back onto the grid (e.g. running your meter backwards) such that you could actually be paid from the power company if you generate more than you use.

Aye, the UK govt is using that carrot to try and swing folk around to the ideas of self-generation. Whether we get sufficient sun, though, is a moot point that needs careful thought.
South (or near south) facing roof slopes we have, or plenty of open acreage. But at 57N the sun, even in summer, is still well diluted in strength.

The power of positive thinking. It is years that they have the new generation of voltaic cells, cheaper, easier to maintain, more efficient. But first the industrial cycle of the old kind has to be completed. Up theirs. Dis-informers. And we wallop all that they propose us. Yuppie.
