Getting back to the original question.

I think many readers have cat avatars because a cat will sit on you, quietly asleep, for a long time. Thereby enabling you to read peacefully. Sometimes they even let you rest your reader on them.

However a dog will want you to go for a long walk and throw balls. This can be dangerous to do while engrossed in your reader.

Therefore a cat makes an ideal pet for company when reading.
