now that ipad2 is supposedly just around the corner, i understand your sentiment to hate the ipad.
Its time to start loving the ipad2, at least for another 6 months when ipad3 is rumored.

Sounds like you ought to sell it or give it to me since it doesn't fit your needs . I'm kind of surprised you didn't return it for a refund in the first few weeks that you owned it.

As far as e-ink, I don't find any wonders. E-ink causes me horrid eye strain unless I'm in an overly well lit area and I had e-ink devices prior to the iPad.

I love my iPad. I can read books, watch a Netflix, play some games, do email, browse the web, etc.

I enjoy my Ipad very much. Its the "computer" I reach for first thing in the morning to catch up on news, email, etc. I do agree that is it too heavy for long term ebook reading. Instead I turn to my 4 oz iPod Touch for recreational reading (the retina display is so much easier to read than the resolution of the ipad) especially in bed. Also it is much more convenient for portability in my purse when on the road.
Sounds like the new ipad 2 will be a slight improvement over the original but I won't be selling mine and replacing it any time soon. Especially since I have the 2 year Apple Care on it so its covered for another 14 months. Will be interested to see how the ipad evolves in another year.

I'm always mystified when somebody says they prefer the LCD on the ipad to e-ink. I mean, how did you ever manage books before? E-ink is the closest we've got to actual paper.
I'm not being sarcastic, just having trouble understanding that.

as far as watching netflix, playing games, email, etc... these things are part of the reason I don't like it. I don't need any more distractions. when I sit down to read, I just want to read and not do all these other things.

I usually tend to fall asleep when i read in eink. Its like a sedative..so so slow that it puts me to sleep.
I use ipad with a matte screen protector and at min brightness.
For pdfs, I use goodreader on ipad and i can flip through my pages as good as a real book at min brightness Or I can use stanza, which renders pdfs in black in night mode. Almost as good as it gets.
Since i have a the habit of suddenly remembering something i ought to check, i can shift out of the app and open a browser..check some stuff and come back again. All in a few secs. Eink..makes me sleep.

Eink has its place..but for me its like a safe sedative...

Hmm, let me put it this way. These things do not install themselves on a new iPad on their own ...

Anyway, here is what you could do:

Reset the iPad so that its in its factory state. Install the ibook application. Then turn off the network connection. Put all the distracting things on the screen into one folder. Call the folder "do not open". Then you only have a folder that tells you not to open it and ibooks.

There you go. End of distraction ....

Different strokes for different folks; my cheapest, nastiest, faded Penguin paperback from the 1960s has better contrast in dim light than my Kindle 3, and the e-ink on my K3 is far better than on my original CyBook (and being a couple of e-ink generations newer I'd expect it to be) but as good as the K3 is it isn't paper. Now for reading outdoors, in the garden, on holiday etc... no problem, e-ink all the way, but indoors or in shade then the iPad does the best job for me. I don't find it heavy - it's lighter than many hardbacks, and a heck of a lot thinner - nor the other functions distracting, but that's more of a personal thing I think <shrug>

Then you basically turn a perfectly good $500 multifunctional device into a heavy, overpriced eBook reader. If you can't deal with the distractions on the iPad (like me: OOH SHINY! Angry Birds!), then you're probably best off getting an eBook reader that's made for reading (like any of the e-ink ones) either in addition to or instead of the iPad.

My iPad replaced a much-loved portable laptop that completely gave up the ghost. The fact that it was so light was one of its many charms and even though I have a 17-inch workhorse laptop that I use for work, portability is not in its job description!

The iPad completely works for what I need it for - browsing, e-mails, shopping, watching videos. It is light, a breeze to use and the picture quality is magnificent. I took way too long in deciding to buy it and could kick myself for waiting so long.

I have not used it for any book-reading yet, maybe due to the fact that I also really enjoy my Kindle. But for everything else it has been aces and I am extremely pleased with it!

I don't find it too heavy. I usually read with it in my lap. There are some good reasons not to buy an iPad, but most of the reasons I've heard are just plain silly. It does too much? It's for media consumption and not production? Well, duh.

I had borrowed an ipad from my work for a week and when it was time to give it back, I really didn't care. I think maybe an ipad is more useful if you don't have (and don't need) a laptop. I do think it makes a fantastic kid's computer but I don't want my daughter having that much "screen time" anyway.

some people (like me) would rather have a single purpose device for reading and have it do it well.
I will curse the day (if it does come) when I will be able to watch videos on a kindle. if I wanted to watch videos, I'd use an...er, ipad.

It's funny, i was a bit of an iPad hater as well until i was gifted one recently.
I have to say it's been a revelation for me in reading and general accessability; i'm currently modding and upgrading my home computer to a fully water-cooled setup and it has been in pieces for weeks; i haven't missed it because i tend to just reach for my ipad next to me for instant-on access to the web, email, books and general info.

Also, some of the pro audio software for it has amazed me.

the Korg and Groovemaker (oh, can't forget Reason) apps are really slick for sure.

Perhaps
Both the iElectribe R and the iMS-20 are easily capable of producing quality, production sounds.
The Gorillaz guy used his ipad with touchOSC and various other stuff to write their whole new album.

The only limitations are self-imposed
