That was also my first thought.
I'll keep my eye on this for the time being. Would be nice if i'm wrong since there would be many benefits if they did it right.

Just another player in a soon to be crowded field. Passing on this one. More interested in next-gen e-ink tech.

I would define it as a serious device because it has the capabilities and battery life that make it very useful for students, engineers and anyone else who uses handwritten notes and sketches extensively throughout their work day. The EeeNote is also not designed to be a video chat, game platform, YouTube browsing time waster. As the name implies, it was designed to be a digital notepad to be used for education and work.

It also has a price point which could place it in the hands of thousands of notoriously poor students. The low price could also attract office workers who may be on the fence about a tablet with similar capabilities, but can't justify the $800 on a pen capable Android or Win7 tablet.

The definition of "success" is harder to pin down, but the fact that all of the Taiwanese retailers appear to be sold out until March leads me to believe that ASUS probably considers it successful already. I certainly feel that I bought a product that I can use every day for years, so that feels like a success to me.

While I don't agree with the originally posted article's claim that the device is a "serious threat to everything" I do think that ASUS has found a niche for the EeeNote that doesn't currently exist. There is no other product on the market built specifically around pen input and has the battery life to last me through a full work day.

I'm not in school anymore so really have no use for this. But strip the wacom and make it an ereader for ePub and PDF, and make it ~100$ and I'm there.

I sure like it though wouldn't have a need for it at the moment. This would be great for students and professionals that take a lot of notes. Does anyone know if it provides a way to “read” handwriting and transcribe it as a text document?

Hi lotrfan,

No. It does not currently provide any OCR capabilities. It does have a virtual keyboard for text entry and the Chinese version of the keyboard has a handwriting recognition input panel that can also recognize English characters.

Each note can be tagged via the virtual keyboard with keywords that are searchable throughout the EeeNote. This also applies to pages within eBooks and various other items in the supplied apps.

All of these entries are stored in a sqlite database, which means that user created applications could also take advantage of this feature.

I found a URL for the manual and quick start guide for the EeeNote.

http://support.asus.com/download/dow...Language=en-us

It's the European site with the English versions. There are several languages listed so choose your version by that. Also, the Quick Start guide and User Manuals are listed separately.

I'd hardly expect OCR in any case. Remember, OCR works by examining an image and looking for shapes it can relate to letter forms. It works pretty well if you have good OCR software, horsepower to run it, and a good quality image of a printed or typed page to start from. Given the wide variety of differences in handwriting, I'd expect any current OCR software to fall flat on it's face trying to recognize it.

(There are times I can't read my own handwriting. I'd hardly expect software to manage it.)

That's sarcasm, right?

It really doesn't work so well in such short replies.
