My son got me a Kindle 3 for Christmas. It is now at the 3.1 software level. I was wondering if it would be possible to run vlc on the kindle to play streaming radio given that it has MP3 support already. If so, what needs to be done to accomplish this?

I was also wondering if it would be possible to use a SIP phone client such as sjphone on my kindle. If so I would of course need a headset for this. Does the kindle include bluetooth support, or would a USB headset work? I assume the headphone jack is just that and does not include support for a microphone.

The k3 does NOT have bluetooth. I don't believe it can work with usb accessories. It is intended more or less to be THE ACCESSORY and will probably not include the necessary firmware/software to work the other way.

The k3 does have a microphone although no one knows Amazon's plans, if any, for it.

There is a "music" app that apparently does do radio but I have not dealt with it. See other threads hereabout for it.

Does the "kindle-jailbreak-0.4.N" hack have left anything behind after the 3.1 update to the Kindle? I didn't uninstall the old jailbreak beforehand. I know that you should uninstall the old jailbreak before upgrading to 3.1 but Amazon updated the Kindle without me knowing since I'm normally connected to the WiFi in my home. I'm asking about the older jailbreak file and whatever it does. Is there a way to remove all of it now that I'm at 3.1? Will there be damage to my Kindle with a future update? The screensaver hack still seems to be working, but I'm worry about what will happen on a future update. Thanks!

Given the k3 has a microphone I guess it would be possible with a SIP client to use it as a speakerphone even if it is otherwise impossible to use a headset with it. This might be worth checking out.

Thanks for the pointer to the other thread. I am checking to see if the app will deal with the internet radio streams I usually listen to, which are provided via internet playlists as opposed to direct stream references.

Hello again! . I was out of computer reach for the past week, so I'll try to cram as much info in one tiny little post as possible ^^.

I'll update both the first post and the wiki pages ASAP to avoid further confusion.

First: Huge thanks to yifanlu for the new jaibreak, congrats!

Now, some pointers for confused users:

Wether you're still on FW 3.0 or upgraded to FW 3.1 (willingly or not), here's what you should know:

* Both the fonts & screensavers hack work on FW 3.1.
* You can safely upgrade a hacked Kindle to FW 3.1, without uninstalling any of my hacks before.
* My old jailbreak is useless on FW 3.1, so you can safely remove it (it only consists of a single file added to the FS), but it's no big deal if you don't.
* You'll have to install yifanlu's jailbreak if you care about being able to install/uninstall/update your hacks on FW 3.1.

You can stream Radio on you Kindle if you install launchpad and Mplayer.

I have a question about NiLuJe's font hack and Duokan. Last year, when I installed Duokan after installing the font hack, my Kindle fonts reverted to default, and I had no font choices in Duokan. At that time, NiLuJe suggested renaming or deleting the 'auto' file, which gave me back my font choices.

Recently I got a replacement Kindle, and I installed Duokan before installing the font hack with Georgia 2 fonts copied over afterwards. Everything is perfect.

Here is the question: If I install the newest version of Duokan, is it going to mess up my fonts? I'd much rather keep my nice fonts than have the small changes that have been made in the last couple of Duokan updates (there is a new one out today).

@montalex: No idea, but I doubt things changed much since then, Duokan will probably still not play nice with my Fonts hack .

Thanks for the quick response, NiLuJe. Your Fonts hack works perfectly when installed after Duokan installation. I'll leave things alone until Duokan comes up with something really tempting. For now I just use Duokan for pdf.

Hi, i have issues with my Kindle, i have 3.0.3 firmware and i patched with JB 0.4N and SS 0.18N, everything works fine, with my own screen saver BEFORE amazon send me the new firmware, i see that my kindle automatically restarts and quickly i turn it off (because a couple of day i was not sure if i can upgrade to 3.1 with my 3.03 JB kindle), soo.. i turn it off and the update 3.1 failed.. BUT since this day my kindle doesnt work the wifi (says wifi mac address unavailable) and i cant upgrade it manually again (error U007) , i restored to factory default and have the same error, i cant upgrade it, i try to remove the JB and SS but also fail. I think that my kindle have the JB and SS but i cant remove it with update_jailbreak_0.4.N_k3w_uninstall.bin , how can i see if still have the JB?.
-i dont have /etc/uks/pubhackkey01.pem (dont have /etc folder)


PD:i try also turn it off for 20 seconds


EDIT: I put the linkss folder back into my kindle and i have the screensavers working , so, my kindle have JB and SS hack, but i cant remove it, again i have U006 error when i try to update it with update_ss_0.18.N_k3w_uninstall.bin
