Bingo! Her Christian name began with A, so when called to line up by first names, she was always first. I believe it was the band director who gave her that musical nickname.

I'm going to take a leap of faith and assume my answer was right. So here's a new question:

Apart from sharing their first two letters, what do these words have in common?
waggle, waistcoat, wake, walnut, walrus, wampum, wan, want
