QUESTION How can I tell if the new Jailbreak 3.1 took? Before when you hacked you would see something on the settings menu beside the version #. Is there anyway to double check other than seeing the ENABLE HACK UPDATES folder on my Kindle root directory? Just curious! |

Thanks so much to everyone here!
I can't believe we have to go through all this just because the a**h**** at Amazon won't allow our own photos on the screen saver - considering the number of complaints I've seen about it.. It's very bizarre that they haven't gotten on to this.. (Yes, I know many are running fonts and other apps, but it seems to me that the Screen Saver is the most common reason to JB!) +1 worked perfectly here. Confirmed Working as Follows: Kindle 3 WiFi (Serial B008...) running Version 3.0.2 +kindle-jailbreak-0.4.N +kindle-ss-0.18.N * Charged kindle fully (paranoid bout losing power during updates) * Uninstalled SS-Hack, then uninstalled original Jailbreak. (I didn't bother removing linkss or any other folders) * Update to Kindle 3.1 - NOT over the air (OTA), I downloaded it from the amazon site (googled: Kindle 3.1 and it was the first link). * Ran the Official 3.1 update (took ages, did 2 restarts and several passes (JUST WAIT)) * Confirmed that the device was updated to 3.1. * Installed the new Jail Break (Version 0.3 from Yifan Lu) - As per the accompanying README.txt in the JB download. * Confirmed that on restart there was a "ENABLE_HACK_UPDATES" file on the Kindle when I plugged in the USB.. * Installed the original kindle-ss-0.18.N hack I had on my kindle. Everything running great.. With the same photos I had before (didn't delete the linkss directory).. Cheers! ObM |

I jailbroke my k3 with 3.0.2 on it several months ago along with the screensaver hack. Just did the auto install over wifi to 3.1 and my screensavers are still working just fine so I guess you don't have to do a thing extra if that's what you started with.

My dad had the old jailbreak and screen saver hack on 3.0.3 when his Kindle did the stealth update to 3.1. Can someone explain to me whether there are any remnants of the old jailbreak on his Kindle or did the new firmware overwrite all of that? I'm not exactly sure what files the jailbreak alters so that's why I'm asking. If there are some kind of leftovers from the old jailbreak I would like to remove them.

You cannot remove the hacks without jailbreak the kindle again. So if you need to remove previous hacks -afaik- you have to: 1. install new jailbreak 2. uninstall previous hacks 3. uninstall current jailbreak regards |

That's great, could you please upload files /usr/bin/wpa_cli /usr/bin/wpa_supplicant /usr/bin/wpa_passphrase and /usr/lib/libgnutls-openssl.so.26.14.11 (maybe you have older version) somewhere?

Thanks, I'll see if I end up replacing the updated files, I'd rather prefer to make the enterprise wpa work under the new fw without to much hassle - some things seem to work, but not quite
(I am really no good with linux networking, so if anybody would be willing to help/comment here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...59#post1415259 it'd certainly help) |

Hey guys,
First time poster here. Today I received my first ever kindle + wifi and updated the software to 3.1. I want to change the default screensvaer and i believe that I have to jailbreak the kindle. Should I just follow the instructions poster by the OP? Also, How do I exactly go about changing the screensaver? thanks in advance |

Then install ss hack. Upon reboot, you'll notice the ss changed and your "dead writers" are gone. Look inside the root dir of your hacked k3, and you'll find the screensaver direcory, it contains a file named something like 00_you_may_delete_me, that's the ss you are using. Just add all files you like naming them as follows: 00_..., 01_..., 02_..., etc. Sorry, I don't have my kindle here and cannot remember the correct dir/file names. |

@yifanlu, I dont know if its normal behavior but:
1. I have fm3.0.2. with jailbreak 0.4 and ss18hack 2. Uninstalled SS-Hack, then uninstalled original Jailbreak 3. Installed the new Jail Break (Version 0.3 from Yifan Lu) 4. Confirmed that there was a "ENABLE_HACK_UPDATES" file on the Kindle when I plugged in the USB 5. I restart again 6. download amazon 3.1 update 7. go to menu/settings/ update your kindle was black and I start update 8. its restart 2 times (take some time), and its done. I have 3.1. 9. next i installed SS-Hack, and now its working but kindle (with active hack) should not allow make this amazon update happened!? |
