i was getting bad reception on my k3- the rogers network it defaulted to is only 2G- so I switched it to bell. much better.

Curious! I see both the Rogers 3G and 2G networks available, but mine defaults to Bell. I have never checked what I was on while in remoter areas of Quebec, or when I was out of Canada. Now I'm curious. I will say that I have been able to get my browser to work in places where no cell phones worked, perhaps because cell phones need a better connection to carry more information more quickly (audio). But damn, it was slow! It was like a flashback to 1990 telephone modem internet! But, I got my paper!

seems like rogers (robbers) tries to scam customers any way they can. bell is not much better. but 2G.. really? what?
kindle is pretty slow anyway though, even through wi-fi.

From the settings menu, press 611. You can see which server you are using. Also from settings menu, 311 switches your server (assuming there is another one available)

Thanks for the info. I'm in Ontario, but I just checked and I am connected to the Bell network.

Yes. Amazon does claim free 3G internationally. Did you check out their local contact us number for the place you stay? I see no issues for [Link removed by Moderating Team]

The Kindle 2i apparently uses EITHER CDMA or GSM, since I am currently connected over Telus CDMA network, but 311 offers me Rogers 3G or 2G (GSM networks) as well. Interesting, since I had thought that WhisperNet was GSM only.

Soooooo, I got my K3 with 3G, and the browser works better than I hoped, I can check my email, surf, search google, the only annoyance is that I have to re-set the page size constantly. Is there any way to increase the font size???? Thanks again for all your help!!!!

no there isn't. this really bothers me too.
all you can do is zoom in.
I would highly suggest using
http://www.readingthenet.com/
you can set the font size from there.
i visit all my sites using that. it makes a world of difference.

I am trying that, but I wish there was a canadian version of the sites!

I have a Kindle 3 wifi and am considering buying a second Kindle so that hubs can have one of his own. (Lucky husband!)

This time around, I'm considering getting a Kindle 3G because of the option to use the browser while travelling. I'm going to the UK in a couple of months, and since I don't own a smartphone, it would be lovely to be able to use 3G for some free browsing.

Of course, this is pointless if (1) there's any trouble with 3G in the Victoria/Saanich area of Vancouver Island, or (2) the Kindle 3 when purchased in Canada doesn't allow free 3G browsing in the UK. [Or (3) in Seattle, WA... another "overseas" destination!]

Can anyone advise? I do use wifi most of the time at home, so it's not critical, but the 3G would be great to have IF free 3G browsing is possible as noted above. (Not so worried about downloading books, since I have a huge backlog of reading to work through anyhow!)

looks like you'll be fine.
you'll be able to use 3G in the UK or Seattle. AFAIK roaming isn't a problem.

My wife has the K3 WiFi, and I have the K3 3G (which also supports WiFi). We did it because this allowed us to have one in graphite and one in white. Plus I travel a good deal and the 3G is really handy. I can answer definitively on Seattle - haven't had any issues at all, anywhere in the greater Seattle area. As for the Island - you should be good almost anywhere, though if there's a Rogers dead-zone you might have an issue there. But I can usually get a good enough 3G connection even in locations where Rogers is iffy.

bZkindle and CRussel - thank you both for reassuring me. That's wonderful news.

I've just learned that I have a tax refund coming *yaay CRA* so I am now in a position to splurge, just a little, and snarfle a 3G model.

Now the only dilemma is, do I get white so that hubs and I can easily distinguish our two models when they're cover-free (if they ever are), or do I go for graphite which, frankly, I think I prefer the look of? :-P

*will probably spend the rest of the weekend struggling with this*

Personally, I much prefer the graphite. it helps the text stand out better.
I had a kindle 2 as well and ended up getting a dark skin for it for just this reason.
