Dead Nook Color

I purchased my NC just before Xmas and rooted it a week later. Since that time I haven't had a single problem with it....until.

A couple of nights ago I unplugged it from its charging cord and it just wont turn on. Nothing I do, no buttons I press get any result at all.

The 'U' at the end of the charging cord pulsates between green and orange about twice a second, I've tried different chargers but nothing helps. Tried it in the PC, same result.

I bought it from Best Buy and they said it has to go back to the manufacturer, or course it's rooted and not sure if this voids the warranty, I'm sure it does.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I would but Best Buy said I have to send it back to the manufacturer, do you think a B&N will exchange it?

If it's dead as a door nail, they won't know it's rooted and your warranty should be honored, just call customer service and tell them it's just dead, more than likely they will send you a new one and have you box up your old one and send it back to them.

Thanks, I took your advice and called CS, they are sending me a replacement with instructions to send the old one back, with the stern admonision that if it's a customer related issue I'd get charged for the replacement

I'll let you know how it turns out..

It could be that it's "busy". It's not dead or a sleep, it's just not responding. You could try disconnecting the battery, that involves removing the back cover and screws. Or you can just let it sit for a few days and see if the battery runs down on it's own. It might be wise to do that anyways since if it is indeed this problem, you ship it back to B&N and it sits for a while until someone gets to it. In that time, the battery exhausts itself and B&N plugs it back into a charger and all is well. They see no reason for why you sent it in and more so, they see you rooted it and violated the warranty. They charge you for the replacement.

I'll try that, I found a link on how to disassemble it so I'll give it a shot. The thing that puzzles me, (well there's lots of things that puzzle me), is the 'U' pulsating between green and orange. I mentioned that to CS but they had no comment on it, I've Googled it and so far no-one else seems to have that issue.

Lucky me.

Won't taking it apart also void the warranty? You can claim you took it apart after the problem, but they will have no way of knowing it to be true.

Beware that as of last december, the B&N warranty explicitly said that removing the back cover to change the battery did not violate the warranty. I just looked online and they removed the "not". Look up the warranty terms that came with your NC if it matters to you.

Removing part of the back cover was allowed because the original eink Nook has a replaceable battery, the NookColor has never had a replaceable battery so tampering with it will void the warranty.

Yeah this is a tough call for the OP, do you roll the dice and take the chance they don't discover it was rooted and get a brand new Nook color or do you take the chance of removing the back and taking out the battery, which will most definitly void the warranty.

Hmmmm If It was me I would take my chances with the new nook color but have $250 on the side just in case.

Or simply let it sit until the battery dies.

Well I took it apart removed the battery, put it all back together, tried to charge it and it still wont come on.

I'm curious, how would they know I'd taken it apart? it's fairly simple to do and there's no marks on it, there's no seals to break to get into it.

Anyway, I'll see what they say, I think it's just fried, but if not I knew the chance I was taking when I rooted it.

I've found myself in the same situation as described above - what ever came of this? I'm rooted and have a custom ROM installed. Did CS charge you for the new NC?

When I plug into the wall charger I get pulsing between orange/green "n" on the charger every second or so for a short time, and then it just goes green. However it also turns on the NC and I get a screen with a red battery tells me the battery is too low to turn on, and to wait 15 minutes. No matter what I do it won't stop bring that display up.

I just tried plugging into USB on my PC instead and it seems to stay in the pulsing state instead of reverting to being just green. The display also seems to stay off. However I don't think it is actually charging.

---
edit - it eventually did stop pulsing and just went green, but it hadn't charged. Still getting the "too low to power on" message.
