Oh, Queen Tess, you may be sexy and charming, but is totally lacking on sense of humor to the point of even tearing apart my favoured rofl emoticon...

Larger, better screens. Hardware designed with reading (specifically!) in mind that suits the activity more.
Also, no one can call me on my Kobo. I don't want to be interrupted while I am reading if I can help it. Spoils the concentration. |

You know what's funny? I put almost all the same apps, and many of the same books on my Nook Color as I have on my existing smartphone. Why? Because the bigger screen makes things more legible.

I AM sexy and charming. I have a sense of humor, but the ROFL icon falls squarely outside of it. And I value sarcasm above all else.

The more I think about it, and this thread has led me to think about it a fair bit, the more I realize that my own preference for dedicated vs. multi-function devices depends entirely on the intersection of use and suitability.
For example, I no longer own or use a dedicated MP3 player. I use my phone. A modern smartphone is at least as good an MP3 player as most dedicated devices, and I've pretty much always got it with me. However, while I do read on it, it hasn't taken over that use case. The problem there is that while it does work as a reader, I get a noticeably better experience from a dedicated device. That's not the case with music, so I've ditched the MP3 player and kept the readers. |

but its worthless if you happen to have bad eyes in need for larger fonts and in the end is presented with less text on screen...
![]() I'm on page 74 in Robinson Crusoe. today was not a good reading day because I sat on the rear of the bus and it shook too much... ![]() |

So, as noted, I have a separate camera with a lot more features (but no gps). It works better overall and takes higher resolution. Its lens is also better protected from pocket dust. The k3 for reading because I prefer the larger screen with more type per page. A car gps and a hiking gps. Both have onboard maps and do not need a data connection. The car (tomtom) talks and has a larger screen. The hiking has extended battery life and is pocketable. Yup, the cellphone, BB, is more of a "swiss army knife" but is not appropriate in a number of situations - at least, not for me. Last edited by FF2; 02-23-2011 at 05:53 PM. |

I treat my iphone in the same way. A swiss army knife for a great deal of things but an ereader for me it is not. |

I've got an iPhone, an iPad and two Sony's. My iPhone is good for small time browsing, checking email, GPS and a bunch of other things, and although I carry a full supply of books on it I don't read off of it unless I don't have a Sony with me.
The iPad is cool too, and I even have my favorite program on it, but I don't use it for reading anymore. Tried it for a while, but in the end I feel like I'm still looking down the head of a flashlight trying to read the text. I can do it for a while, but not for serious reading. If I'm going to sit down for more than a few minutes, I want one of my Sony's. eInk makes a *huge* difference for me when it comes to comfort, and longer battery life is a plus. I don't even have to think about it anymore. I know what I'm going to reach for when it's story time. |

I will read on my iPhone here and there, but I prefer reading on my Kindle or my Nook. Just a personal preference..don't care for reading on a small screen.
