calibre introduces open books

calibre introduces Open Books: a database of drm-free ebooks outside the public domain.
There is a link to open books on the calibre home page. Spread the word.

If you are an author or publisher of DRM-free e-books please contact me with your information on this thread or via a private message and I will add you to the database.

Open Books is a developing project. We will be adding books regularly and will introduce a search function and other features as our collection of books increases. We already have some authors on mobileread on our list.

The entire Baen library is available DRM free. In multiple formats. Not sure what the procedure would be to get all their books listed, but all are available from www.webscriptions.net.

Very true. The books included in the Open Books site are also all outside the public domain.

Your points are valid but are so far out of context. How do your points have anything at all to do with this thread or topic? Have you even reviewed the Open Books site?

Keep in mind that DRM free does NOT mean 'free of financial obligation'.
I agree with everything you said but it has no place in this thread. Please check out the site before you jump to conclusions about its layout or goals.

I understood that. How is that a bad thing for Baen? Getting as many DRM free, non-public domain books into the Open Books project site is the goal of the site and benefits everyone involved.

Again have you looked at the site?

From my perspective you still don't understand what the Open Books project is about. Please review the site before digging yourself any deeper.

The Open Books project does not make books available for free. That line alone dug you deeper. I won't discuss things with you further until you thoroughly check out the Open Books site.

Thanks dwanthny for clarifying.
Let me make this clear. open Books does not sell books. open books does not pirate books or provide them free.

open books catalogues titles and authors and provides links to the websites where the books are already available. it's a website where people can surf for books from Baen, smashwords fictionwise amazon (DRM-free) etc all together and then once they find the book they are looking for they click on the link which takes them to the Baen, smashwords fictionwise, amazon etc. website to purchase it from them by paying them.

Open books does not take a cut. Our only aim is to make DRM-free options easily accessible so people see the obvious advantages of DRM-free e-books and know where to find them.

We thought it would be good to provide users of calibre with an immediate database of DRM-free e-books so they can use the full extent of calibres features.

@Krittika - You're Welcome and I'm glad to see you back in the calibre forum.

Having one source for all DRM-free books is an excellent way of promoting DRM-free books. It also puts pressure on other publishers to do the same.

@CRussel: thanks

I am adding their books. I am doing it manually and trying to maintain a balance between the different genre.
