I did have hidden files enabled, but I still couldn't see the system folder.

I had to uncheck "Hide Protected Operating System Files" in Windows 7 to show the folder.

Would that folder not show up if I was not Jailbroken?

No, once you can "see" it, it doesn't matter if it is jailbroken or not. It's related with your PC rather than the "un/jail" thing.

It's because both hacks shuffle the keys and nasty conflicts might appear.
Jailbreak has different naming scheme for stored keys, it names them pubprodkey0*.amazon.pem and pubprodkey0*.hack.pem. On boot it copies appropriate keys to pubprodkey0*.pem (the only possible name for valid key on 3.1).
But the .pem extensions makes all the keys valid on 3.0.x.

OTOH Updates Provider hack names the stored keys like this:
pubprodkey0*.pem.amazon and pubprodkey0*.pem.hack.
That excludes them from '*.pem' glob in 3.0.x's update script.

Wanted to report success. 3.1 came overnight after I finally decided to turn wifi back on.

Installed the new jailbreak and then the screensaver hack. All appears to be working.

It worked.
I ran uninstall 0.3, removed manually the jailbreak directory, then installed jailbreak 0.3.

No I have an empty file ENABLE_HACK_UPDATES into the root dir, as expected.

I'm not sure if it's just my imagination but page turns seem to be faster than ever for me now on 3.1.

I haven't bothered with the "Public Notes" feature but I did come across the "Before you go" thing at the end of a book where you can rate the book just read and tweet or facebook the thoughts. It's sort of neat if you're into the whole social networking thing.

Not sure if this went right, had the old JB on 3.02 along with custom screensavers.

installed 3.1 straight over everything without bothering to uninstall. I can be a bit reckless with things.

Checked that screensavers are still working which they are so haven't bothered with the most recent JB. Is that right ?

Succes! Uninstalled all the old stuff, updated the Kindle, installed the jailbreak and the hacks and both font hack and screensaver hack work like a dream. Thanks yifanlu!!

One thing I noticed: on 3.03 I manually set the horizontal margins from 40 to 20 by fiddling with the reader.pref. I found that setting unchanged on 3.1. Has Amazon changed this preference to default or was my reader.pref untouched by the update?

If you look in the duokan thread, I've converted the duokan installer to 3.1. If you want to use it, don't install the jailbreak yet, but install duokan first. The installer is untested though because I do not use duokan personally.

Unrelated, but I'm too lazy to make a new thread. I'm a bit caught up in this Kindle craze and I while I'm interested, I want to do something else for the community. So, I finally found the files to the project I was working on a few months ago. I was trying to port Kindle 3.0 to Kindle 2/DX. I got as far as actually getting 3.0 to load on the K2 with a slow browser and a buggy PDF reader (and no TTS). However, after buying a Kindle 3, I sold my K2 and forgot about the whole thing. It seems now, a lot of people want 3.0/3.1 on their old Kindles, so I can continue this project if someone donates their broken kindle 2/dx to me. I don't need a working screen.
