Just upgraded from Sony 505 to Kindle 3
Hello everyone. I've been around here for a couple years and have been using a Sony Reader PRS-505. While I always liked the device I felt it was time for something faster and with a better screen. I really liked the new Sony models with that IR touchscreen setup, but they are very expensive plus the 6" model has some serious availability issues. So my new Kindle 3 plus lighted cover arrived about 1/2 hour ago
![]() Putting my old 505 side-by-side with the Kindle 3 *really* shows how much better these e-ink Pearl screens are - wow. So much better contrast and I love it! I'm still fighting with the kindle's wifi settings - can't get it to connect to my office wifi (I'm in IT so I've got no one to ask buy myself )Initial impressions are very good so far! |

On my 505 I'm about 200 pages into book 1 of the Runelords series by David Farland:
http://www.amazon.com/Sum-All-Men-Ru.../dp/0812541626 I'm going to make this my first Kindle book purchase and I'll continue there

Thanks for the welcome everyone
![]() I haven't had a chance to do more than play around, but gotta say the syncing between my android phone and the kindle rocks. EDIT: and now I'm off to the Kindle dev forum to figure out how to load custom images for the screensaver.

Sorry for the double post, but wanted to make a new comment about my new Kindle
![]() This morning I tested the text-to-speech feature. I've got an FM transmitter I sometimes use for my mp3 player so I can listen in the car. I plugged the transmitter into the Kindle and listened to the book I'm reading as I would an audio-book. It was surprisingly good. Of course it's nothing like a professional audio-book recording, but it was completely acceptable and after a while I found my brain shifting to fill in more expression where the Kindle's speech was lacking, kind of like I was coloring in a black & white photo or something. Anyway, this is fantastic as it means I can *really* be obsessive with my reading now! ![]() I've got about a 20 to 30 minute drive to and from work and audio-books have always been a great way to help me enjoy the commute. Now I can do that and just continue reading normally at lunch or in the evening. Love it! |

heheheh I know plenty of people who use the TTS while driving. It is a nice feature. The other trick is that TTS will automatically change pages for you. So if you are working out at the gym you can set the TTS to a speed that changes the pages for you while you are using one of the machines. Just bring a head set or turn the volume all the way down and read away.

Yeah I noticed it turns the pages as it reads them. I caught the page turn out of the corner of my eye and was at first surprised, but then realized that just makes sense to turn the pages as it goes.

hehehe except when I use my stationary bike at home I tend to pop on a tv show through Netflix so I'm working the body while feeding candy to the brain.
I've found that an hour long U.S. tv show when watched through netflix (no commercials and credits) ends up being about 40 minutes of actual show which is perfect for a workout on the bike!

Because the version I had on my Sony was given to me by someone else from a rather dark and stormy source. It's poorly formatted and entirely illegitimate. I was beginning to enjoy it so I wanted to go ahead and buy the legit version. Yeah I'm kinda one of *those* guys. Amazon's setup that lets you sample any book before buying makes it all much simpler for how I tend to approach things.

The improvements to the screen when compared to the sony 505 are really noticeable. I got the lighted case as well, and am really pleased with how securely the kindle is held, and how sturdy and convenient the light is. Enjoy! |
