Hi!
I brought up Star Trek for two reasons. One was about the economics of scarcity as mentioned, but the other deals directly with the value of copyright in "commercial" work. Did you know that one of the inventors of the cell phone got the idea for the device after watching Star Trek? If you took a poll of all scientists, I suspect a very significant portion of them would tell you they were heavily influenced by Star Trek. Star Trek is under copyright yes? But it is also mostly free, at least in some parts of the world. Think of all the technology that has been developed due to copyrighted science fiction, and then think of all the technology that might have been and can still be developed if copyright was done away with and science fiction texts were available to everyone everywhere. There's lots of reasons we should do away with copyright, but all we need is one. Also, yes I am unemployed at the moment, people think I'm weird when I start talking lol. I also think this thread is mostly done, there have indeed been many reasons given for the eradication of copyright, we could go into the realm of property in general, but I'm going AFK for a few. ![]() |

Yeah, I take shots at politicians because its easy, but I agree that most of them have good intentions. The problem is that there really isn't much criteria to be a politician except the ability to pander to a diverse group of people. Also, they are often stuck between having to please those who help keep them in power (monied interests) and the voters. It can vary from place to place as well. Generally, I think the worst thing you can do is have low expectations for politicians. Better to be disappointed again and again then to accept mediocrity or corruption as the norm.

Hey, who are you to say when this thread is done. And how dare you talk about copyright in a thread about...what was this thread about again?
"Star Trek is under copyright yes? But it is also mostly free, at least in some parts of the world. Still, I think you have things backwards. Major scientific research can only be done with lots of capital. To even have the opportunity to develop new scientific technologies you have to live in a fairly wealthy culture. That also probably means you can afford access to inspiring works of fiction. Science Fiction is one area where Copyright may be unnecessary. Cory Doctorow makes all his works available for free and he does pretty well. Peter Watts writing career was in the toilet before he released his works under a Creative Commons license, and he says releasing his books for free online saved his writing career. Scifi fans are passionate about their culture, and they will dish out every last dollar they make to support it, and they love to share their passion with others as well. So there are some instances where Copyright may be unnecessary and in fact counterproductive. |

Ah, seems Solid Snake is back. Well, perhaps not such skillful spy, but at least a good author as presented in his "Bakery Blues" ebook from Amazon for only 3 bucks? Hmm, no, not yet... juvenile dry narration of the struggle for a job is not what I'd call good fiction. Hey, perhaps that should be made free!
Hey, from what scifi TV show Graham Bell got the idea for his futuristic device again? |

I heard that some scientist invented a Star Trek Replicator a few years ago but Disney had him executed before he could bring it to market. Or maybe that was the Holo-deck.

There is a real misunderstanding of copyright going round in this thread... it refers to the expression of ideas, entertainment etc in a printed or digital form... it doesn't refer to the physical expression of a device... real objects are dealt with by something called Patents... and you can't patent things you can't make otherwise the late Arthur C Clarke would have been collecting money from every geosynchronous satellite producer as he suggested the idea in print in 1945. It's not copyright holding up your Star Trek and other SF tech, it's inability to do it...

Not a misconception, giggleton was saying that works of fiction can give us ideas that we wouldn't have come up with otherwise. He's saying that the more fiction we have access to, the more material and inspiration we have for our own ideas.

He does well, using his eBooks as advertising for his paper books. That model wouldn't work unless he actually made his living by selling paper books.
