I meant a reality tv show about pop-singing pirates who steal reality tv shows.

Anyway this debate will never be over. Not as long as there's copyright... This thread is pretty much dead though. RIP ![]() |

As Cory Doctorow says, the internet is essentially a giant xerox (or is it zerox?) machine. copying won't get any harder. Hard drives won't get ay smaller. People will not cease to do what they have always done, and that is share information and culture that they find important or that has impacted their life in some profound or heartfelt way. Before the internet copyright was easier to enforce, but know creators must adapt to a new reality. They can decry this new reality as unfair. They can demand that governments pass more laws and regulate the internet more. They can denounce pirates as lowlife scum. Or they can dismiss pirates as nothing more than selfish teenagers. if it is true that people grow out of the mindset that there for be free then creators have nothing to worry about and this whole debate is moot. Creators can figure out ways to exploit to technology, new ways to monetize their talents, or they can let technology overwhelm and crush them. I think only the most innovative and flexible minds will be able to survive this technology apocalypse.
Industries have always claimed new technologies were existential threats. When it first became possible to record music, musicians cried that it was the end of the performance industry. What actually happened was that music recording technology enabled more musicians to make money off their music than ever before.Oh, and performance musicians are still doing alright. When radio came out it was proclaimed the end of the music industry. When cable companies emerged it was proclaimed the end of television and movies. The vcr was supposed to kill movies. What have been the positive consequences of filesharing? It was filesharers that forced music companies to publish digital versions of their songs. Filesharing was the internets first killer app(according to doctorow). It encouraged greater investments in broadband technology and memory. I don't claim to have ay answers. I think creators must understand that the environment is ever changing. No business model can stay the same. No one is entitled to make a living doing one particular thing. I for one don't believe ebook piracy is the massive threat that a lot of other readers believe it is. If an author really moves, really touches, really affects his audience, his fans will support him. That doesn't mean there it will be no piracy, but it does mean that as long as there are good writers there will be fans willing to pay for that writing, not because they have to, but because they want that writer to continue to create works. (This is assuming that our minds don't become so vitiated that we cease to be able to distinguish good writing with bad writing and begin to equate tweets with shakespeare. But if that happens our problemswould be a lot bigger than writers being able to make a living.) Just think about this:If Stephen King announced that unless his next novel sold half a million copies he would be unable to write anymore, don't you think that all of his hardcore fans would go out and buy his novel? Just looked that up. Funny and true. I guess i can't fault enkidu if its a law. Anways, enkidu's right. If their had been dissenters in 30's Germany there would have been no holocaust and no second world war. Its not like hitler would have executed the dissenters or anything like that.
I just realized how hilariously contradictory my previous post was. I said only the most flexible and innovative would survive the current copyright apocalypse, and then I said that piracy would never be that big of a deal because true fans would always support their authors. Brains rotting. Logic first thing to go. barely complete sentences. fjaoejlf |

I have an almost infinite number of answers, all I do is think of answers to seemingly insurmountable problems. Whether or not anyone else will like those answers is another matter entirely. It seems to me that altering the physicality of another brain, to match the mind of your own or others is one of the hardest things someone can do, but we continually strive to do so.
TRUTH: We cannot deny knowledge to those who cannot afford it. Copyright is an illusion, and can be ended now if we so choose. Just share everything you can, this is not "wrong" and this is not "right" This is just something that we need to do. If you like the work of a certain individual, send them some monies. Cake. Creators have the right to sell, but the user has the right to share and possibly even resell. This is not a paradox. It is up to each user to decide who to support monetarily, a very important decision, and one that should never be taken lightly. Society is what we make it. |
