A 200% markup isn't unusual for any product. The gaming business has a much larger markup, over 1000%+.

I am not getting something about this subject. Seems like this subject only appies to the Galaxy Tab (and maybe the Xoom, just released). The only other tablets with 3g are the Dell Streak (and I would seriously consider one if it were offered by Verizon), and the Huawei S7 (although it seems to be difficult to get on a GSM-based provider, esp T-Mobile, although not so problematic on AT&T per http://www.androidtablets.net/forum/huawei-tablets/ topic postings, so most users are "getting by" with wifi only, and it costs $300 at Best Buy "normally" - 249 this week). Most other tablets discussed on http://www.androidtablets.net/forum/ seem to be wifi only. Maybe they are "rare" because they keep selling out as with the wifi-only Archos 101 and 70 tablets (under $400, or less for smaller sizes), and the Nook Color ($250). Enjoying my wifi-only Archos 5 Internet Tablet ($125 open-box closeout at Best Buy, but that is an exceptional situation). Last edited by roc; 02-20-2011 at 03:45 PM. |

I think that, from major manufacturers, they do not want to be seen as providing something that is inferior or a step backward to the Old Jobsian Fondleslab. So all aspects need to be on a par if not better. There are a multitude of 7inch Wifi only Android tablets coming out of China, and in some places rebadged and sold for less than $200. I'm tempted by the Nationite MIDnite, but as I have a netbook and a Galaxy S there is no justification for it . |

So if that is the case, then the competition can easily produce product of equal or greater value at a price that is lower than what Apple charges. The competition is deliberately trying to sell their tablets at higher prices than the iPad because they want to avoid a "race to the bottom" (price-wise). Netbooks experienced an accelerated race-to-the-bottom that ended up not being very profitable. These companies want to avoid a repeat of that.

All I know of the major manufacturers tablets is that they are too pricey for me to even bother looking into. And I don't want another telecom bill on top of that. Last edited by M0zza; 02-20-2011 at 06:25 PM.

I wouldn't go so far as to say Apple is overpriced - though I would say they don't compete on price and are more than willing to leave the bottom end of the market to others. As for the pricing on other tablets - there are plenty of cheap Wi-Fi tablets if you're willing to go with a resistive screen. Beyond that, root a Nook Color. |

The apple tax has reduced somewhat over the years, but it is completely false to claim it isn't still there.

Find a PC with the same exact hardware and features. The Apple equivalent will be of equal price or less. You're looking only at the fact that Apple doesn't sell lower cost laptops or desktops.

No, I don't think they do. I'd say the iDevices are competitively priced, but that's not the same thing as competing on price. Apple prices them where they want to price them - and let everyone else do the price movement.
