NAS is a good point, hadn't thought about that. But other than that, my laptop bag. It contains not only my laptop, but also my driver's license, external HD and BBMini. And it's on the way to the exit (naturally, depending on where the fire is...). If I can't reach it, the NAS is right underneath the stairs... If the cats were anywhere near, I'd throw them out the window onto the roof (we only have a ground floor and an attic). Probably opening the window above the bed would be enough... (we've had them jump out of those windows a few times already last summer )

Right, and then the servers go down without any notice...

What Astra said, my biggest worry with the cloud idea is, what happens if these companies orphan us? I keep a 1TB drive locally with a complete backup of my 2 primary machines and a second 1TB drive I used to keep off site at my office I now keep that drive in a fire safe (I hope). I guess I don't trust people to keep my data.

The only person you can trust and rely on is yourself <--->never trust or rely on anybody but yourself.
The rest is a bonus.

What a cynic!

I agree 100% thought, although there are times you do have to trust someone else, think about removing an inflamed/burst appendix by yourself?

Cheers

Unfortunately.
Then you should zip it not to grumble about the sloppy job they have done.

What I would also save in a fire: my old money-box, that I got when I was 5 years old. My father used to go and buy a new butane-bottle every few months, as we cooked on butane in these days. One day I got this exact replica of that butane-bottle as a money-box.

We got a pig when we got married. If I were to take that with me, I'd be bogged down terribly! It was (and stil is) filled with coin money. About €300 of it. And we never removed anything from it (only fill it with any loose coin we may find).

My brother is a welder by trade and an artist as a hobby. He makes huge stainless steel "Banks", made from stainless pipes, and polished. The Banks don't have an opening to remove the money, and the only way to get it out was to saw off the top or bottom (he will re-weld any that are cut open) this was how he saved money and it turned into a moneymaking business. These banks weigh close to 30 kilos and would be very hard to move when full of coin.

I mention this because my friend, that had his house burn down and the reason for this thread, had one of my brothers banks. After the fire they were looking for anything they could salvage and came across the bank. It was only slightly scorched or so they thought, when they moved it there was none of the expected clinking of coins. When they had time to take a good look at it, all the paper money was burned to a crisp and the coins were only slightly distorted, but worthless.

Did I say "burned"? I meant bogged down! that thing is heavy! (no paper money at all. Only coins, €1 and blow, and that with over €300!)

Nope looks like you said bogged

I knew what you meant, your comment reminded me of my brothers banks
