What's the one thing you would rescue if the house was on fire?

This may seem like a stupid question but someone I know just had their house burn to the ground. Luckily everyone and all the pets got out safe, they lost almost everything else.

My friends wife was the only one awake at the time and the only one that thought to save anything other than the 5 cats, 3 dogs and 2 ferrets. What she thought to save was her jewelry, some of it had been passed down from her great great grandmother. They literally had nothing except the cloths on their backs, which wasn't much, they were all in bed.

So, I would save my laptop, its the only sentimental thing I own that I don't wear and I could at least still make a living.

My NAS box. It has my eBook collection, my video library, all my music, etc. It's probably my single most treasured possession

Saving the cats first is a given.
Second - my glasses - as I can't see a thing without them.
Third - my Kindle DXG - my constant companion [with the first & second items]
Fourth - my keys - so we could relocate in the car.

Priority 1 is the gecko and the cat.
Priority 2 is my musical instruments.
Priority 3... well, if I've got time for a priority 3 I've probably got time to wait for the fire department. But I've got a pile of sentiment-ridden stuffed animals I would save if I could. (Come to think of it, since we live in an apartment priority 3 would probably be the cats across the hall.)

Priority 1 - my husband! *pats him on the head*
Priority 2 - my one-terabyte external hard drive (= full computer backup that includes photos, music files, personal documents, etc.)
Priority 3 - handbag containing wallet with ID, cellphone, Kindle, iPod, and other goodies that would be useful to have in the event of No Place To Live.

I'd echo poohbear_nc on the glasses except that chances are generally good that they're already on my nose :-)

Assuming people are all accounted for, I'd grab my laptop---it has all my books, music, movies etc. on it and is pretty much my only possession of note besides clothes.

laptop, wallet and kindle. and also any personal documents (such as diplomas, tin number, PASSPORT omg, etc) that i can. thankfully they're all in one folder.

it might sound silly to rescue personal documents when you can just request them again from government institutions, but ours is so corrupt that they offer birth certificates FOR DIFFERENT PURPOSES and the birth certificates have expiry dates, so that you'd need to pay for a new one again. D:

....hmm i might not get out alive xD;;

1. USB stick. It has all loggings and passwords.
2. Sony PRS-650.
3. External HD that has films and music.

One of backups with my ebooks and pics is on external HD in the office, more than a mile away from home.

Your government sounds a lot like my government... mayhaps it's the same government? Our birth certificates only last 6 months!

2. My purse - it has all my cards in it - and usually my e-book reader.
3. Laptop
4. E-book reader (if not in the purse)
5. My dictionaries, if possible. They'd be higher on the list, but they are very heavy.

I would probably end up in the yard with 1 shoe, a lamp, and a thermos.

All of our document are locked in a fireproof box, so hopefully they would survive. Also in the box are a dozen or so CD's with thousands of family photos from as far back as the 19-teens that I spent over a year scanning from old albums. And the tassels from Tim's and my high school and college graduations.
