Pandigital's instructions tell you to hold the vol+ and power keys for 5 second and the tablet will flash itself. That's not quite right. That will get you to the "power-down" prompt.
When you power up, hold the vol+ and Power for 30 seconds, you should see a box and android. About half way through it will try to power up again into the Pandigital paper. Hold the vol+ and power for another 30 seconds during this reboot, and it will finish the flash. You should see the new Linux-like desktop when you have completed the process successfully. This more complex process is probably a good thing, since you are less likely to accidentally try to flash while your on a low battery. |

Help, something has gone very wrong. Afterpushing the power key left and the volume+ button, I got a triangle with an explanation mark and a green robot. It is frozen on that screen and won't turn off or on. It's been frozen on for 10 minutes. Is there a way to reload or redo or even turn it off?

PS. If you are upgrading the internal card.... do it either before the flash and reboot with the old firmware to initialize it or after the flash is done and the new firmware will initialize it. Last edited by tselling; 02-18-2011 at 08:45 PM. |

thankyou for the help, yes, I had the external SD card with audiobooks inserted. Yes, the reset button cleared it. I will try again in the morning. I'd like one last night with my PN just in case.....The instructions on the site are very sparse. If I ever get it, I think I'll document and post step by steps for other newbies..

When I got the triangle, I connected the device to my PC via USB and deleted the old image. That made it boot the new one.

I've tried 3 times and can not get it to update. Each time, I get through the green droid and the box with the arrow and when it is updating , it does go back to the blue paper screen half way through. It doesn't matter if I hold the power and volume+ or not at that point, I cannot get it to boot to the adroid system. It does ask for language then region for the time and date, but then reverts to the original screen..
Is it possible that the updater file chose the wrong update version to install? Or was I to have chosen? Could the new 8gig internal sd card have anything to do with the problem. I'm getting frustrated, but happy at least I have a nice reader. Last edited by dixieknits; 02-19-2011 at 09:34 AM. |

The file named "SH20_20110127_K_PD_INX7E_ENG_6410POP.zip" is the "tablet" style Open Platform firmware.
The file named "S10_11_19_K_PD_INX7E_ENG_6410POP.zip" is the "eReader" style firmware. Try connecting your WPDN to your PC with the USB cable and looking at the drive that shows up (take out your extrnal SD card). If you have more than one file listed above or any extra *6410POP.zip named file, then delete it. Chances are you have both files on the internal SD and the updater keeps grabbing the wrong one, or just bailing out. |

I feel like a dummie, I had the wrong file on there. Will try again. Thankyou.. I had tried the upgrade both through the cable and internal card and also using the external card only with the zipped upgrade file (as recommended on Slateroid to avoid bricking) and each time came up with the original software. I hope I get it soon before wearing out the off/on switch and +volume..

There are a lot of different voices on Slatedroid saying a lot of different things to a lot of different people all at the same time.
The warnings on "bricking" your device really have to do with moving back and forth between the various mods and hacks and the newer Pandigital firmware. If you have only used the "official" firmwares from Pandigital, you should be OK. |

Success almost. I have managed to get the Android OP loaded and working . However, nothing else works.. The BN ap says it is not loaded. I went to Slide and loaded Laputa however, it did not function properly and I was able to remove it. Next, I went back to Slatedroid and downloaded and flashed Kewlguys bundled enhancements that would allow me Android Market access to instal Cool Reader but it did did not boot up with the enhancements, though it did show me the the green droid installing. I put the zip file on a blank SD card and powered up the Novel with the power and volume+ button on. When it got half way through the upgrade it turned itself back to the blue paper and booted in it's OP style screen, but nothing added to allow me to load apks. I was able to download Cool Reader but it is in a folder named "download" visible only through the usb cable. Sorry to be so painfully needy, but I"m out of my comfort zone entirely with this and am not sure what to do next. Thankyou guys for your help..

If you're flashing manually from a Slatedroid mod, you might want to ask for help at Slatedroid in one of the threads for the mod.

edit: 1st thing I'd try is what tselling is suggesting: reflash again w/o the external SD and see if this makes the apps work /edit
when you say the preloaded apps don't work, it makes me think maybe you only flashed the official firmware once. when moving from the stock 2010 to official OP 2011, you have to flash twice for the apps to work (the updater tells you to do it a second time if it's necessary, but it's not very clear and people have missed it) but since you have SAM working, maybe that's not it. since you are having problems with the firmware itself (not just the mod), maybe try over. if it were me, I would do a factory reset (clear all data thru tools>>privacy) and go back to Pandigital and update again (choosing redownloading the file when it tells you it is already there). If after you think you're done the apps still don't work, reflash again doing the power/volume pinch. Once you get that up and running, you can retry the kewlguy stuff. good luck. I did the install 3 times, the last directly from a freshly formatted 2G external SD card and finally it took. The other aps were working, but the B & N ap said it was not installed. Also, the calculator had an error, but is now working. Before installing the update for the third time, I tried to install Kewlguy's bundled enhancements. Honestly, I do not know it fhey took or not. I was able to access the AndroidMarketplace, but got the message that my "phone number was not recognized with my email address.
I've installed an removed, Cool Reader, I found it had no formatting features and all looked like straight text files. Next I tried Aldiko, but found there menu buttons or way to exit the program other than shutting down the device. B & N is working and the ap installer and file manager. After powering down the PN, the reader does not remember my place in the book less, I've bookmarked it which is easy to do. So far, B & N is the best reader I"ve been been able to find for the Pandigital. If anyone know of any more like Bluefire or Stanza or a version of Aldiko with menu options, please let me know. I'll play with it some more this evening when I have wifi access. Again thankyou all for your help. |
