ideally e-ink. But I really don't care, as long as its legible and allows me to carry a large library in a single mobile device.

pbooks are as dead as the trees making them up.

Really think that we ought to make some differentiation about book types... I agree that fiction is great on eReaders but there are large numbers of paper books that will not transfer to e-devices decently for a many years to come, if at all.

Examples: I have a book called Fighting Sail which is a history of Napoleonic Naval warfare illustrated by period artwork... the book is approx 2 feet by 3 feet in size (coffee table, just add legs and you've got a coffee table) with numerous two page full colour spreads of art... Even on a large computer screen, it isn't as good as the paper. Applies to many history books especially military history with many maps etc. Almost any book with quality artwork, graphics and/or photographs together with most complex textbooks (many tables, illustrations and internal X-refs). Collectibles such as History of Disney...

Hence "pbooks are dead..." is a considerably premature statement except maybe for fiction...

Frankly, I throughly enjoy reading LCD on my iPad. If the screen seems too bright, I turn down the brightness so no eyestrain. I prefer the sepia over black and white for long term reading. Do hope that Apple can shave the weight down a little as I find it a bit heavy for a long session of reading.
I do really like the Pearl e-ink of the K3 but lighting was always an issue.

So where's the option for the non-backlit LCD (e.g., Jetbook and Aluratek)?

My wife has a JBL and loves it. I guess that is a pretty good plug for non backlit LCD

The option is eink.

Which "eink flavor" or device you need or want, that's a different story and there are a lot of factors to consider when purchasing such device and a lot of options as well.

For reading novels, e-ink. I still buy most of my field-related books in paper format, however, because they are still not yet suitable to be read on my e-ink reader (perhaps on a large-screen e-ink reader they will be alright, if they can be formatted somehow so that I have easy access to indices, TOC and the like).

Quite true, but discussion of other book types is a bit off topic for this thread. This thread is clearly described in its title as being about preferences for reading novels.

Was not suggesting otherwise, just clarifying that we were talking novels when others were stating "pbooks are dead" I stated I agreed that it was probably accurate for fiction but not other paper... hardly changing the direction of the thread as I didn't ask for discussion of non-fiction types...

Once again, I agree. E-ink is much more smooth and relaxing than real ink.

Even better than eInk, is audio. With my trusty Sansa Clip+ always in my pocket, I'm never without a book no matter where I go. The same can't be said for ebooks, since I rarely have an ereading device with me outside of my home.

Long live audiobooks.

I prefer pbooks. My ereader is great for portability, but i find the actual reading experience more pleasant with paper. There's no one big issue, just lots of niggles that add up to a slightly less comfortable read with eInk (slow page changes, too little text per page, harder to move around in a book, clunky software for sorting and filing books), though that might just be because I'm slow to adapt to new reading habits.

Also, there are so many books that aren't available in e-form; it's not very logical, but I think if I could replace my whole library of favourite pbooks with ebooks, i would; somehow, only being able to replace some, and being left with a mix of ebooks and pbooks, would detract from my enjoyment of them.

So for now, my reader is mainly for trains/aeroplanes etc

I am more interested in the size and format of the device, rather than the technology of the screen.

I can't read a book on a computer monitor or a laptop screen for a long time without straining my eyes, but I don't have any trouble reading on my smartphone or iPod. I do have trouble reading on my iPad.

The best part about my e-ink devices is that they are not too small (like the phone or Touch) and not too big (like the iPad.)

In the scope of this poll, I have no preference or choice.
