Torrents? (Sorry, cannot find the Newbie section)
I think this post would better go in the Newbie section, but I cannot seem to locate it today. So, a duh question.... Oftentimes I see current/popular ebooks listed as free downloads, often with references to "torrents." I am unclear on what these torrents are. Am I safe in assuming that illegal looking free ebooks are potentially dangerous, in addition to being illegal of course? (Looking for a temporary free download from a reputable dealer, not pirated.) Thank you for your assistance. Terrific website!

If you're looking for legal free ebooks, check the Deals, Freebies and Resources forum.

And of course, for out-of-copyright free ebooks, check Mobileread's library

Files from torrents are as likely to cause problems as any other random file downloaded off the internet.

I really was not asking for assistance in downloading illegal material and apologize if it sounded that way. I am just trying to learn. I had tried to learn about the subject of torrents on my own, but discussions were a little over my head, and I'm not a total tech moron. (This reply is why I knew I should have posted in the Newbie section and sorry I could not find it.)

I wouldn't pirate ebooks if I were you. Not due to a healthy respect for the law, but due to the pure randomness of it. You get other peoples bad reading lists rather than your reading tastes (which one would assume are better than that).
After all, that particular book you want often is unlikely to be what others want - and there are a hell of a lot of books out there.
Easier just to buy. Or get the free ones that have fallen out of copyright, or been given away free.
