The easy route is just to rename both of the Amazon keys in /etc/uks which should prevent all Amazon updates from ever being applied. The only problem is that it doesn't stop the Kindle from downloading or attempting to update. You'd have to mess around with otaup or some of the other files to prevent that from ever happening.

You'll have to package this up into an update file for your Kindle.

Do I need "usbnetwork hack" to acces to keys in /etc/uks or "JailBreak" is enough?

Is here step by step guide to disable or block automatic update?

I am on 3.1, I may have an issue with my Kindle so it might need to go back to Amazon. Would a full reset back to Factory Conditons remove the jailbreak and screensaver hacks?

No. It won't remove all of the hack files.

Has anyone been able to get "nocondensed" to work? Sometimes I feel like going back to Caecilia but I really hate the condensed version. The instructions say place a blank "nocondensed" file in linkss—which i assumed meant linkfonts, though I tried both—but that did not work.

Hi All,

I have a Kindle 3, currently running system software version 3.0.2. I really want to install the screen saver hack, as the default images are driving me crazy, but I just want to make sure that I'm understanding all of the directions before I take the jump.

Here is one of my first questions: After copying the correct version of the jailbreak bin file to the root directory of my Kindle, I am supposed to safely eject the Kindle from my computer, the Update the Kindle form the home page (Menu > Settings > Menu > Update Your Kindle). Will updating my kindle this way force a download of version 3.1 of the Kindle firmware? If that is the case, then I won't be able to install the screen saver hack. Correct?

I will wait for a reply before proceeding any further. I'm looking forward to your replies. Thanks.

@JerryinOCMD,
Just make sure you have your 3g/WiFi on OFF position and proceed with your update. No harm about 3.1. Actually 3.1 is an "early release" meaning it is not automatically downloaded.

I second those positive vibes, and hope the developers come up with something quickly. There are reports on Kindleboards.com that 3.1 is now being pushed automatically to Kindles. My wireless is off for the time being.

I read that, too, and also turned off wireless. But I have not read about it happening on this forum so I suspect people are misinterpreting something or other (just gotten to this kindle subforum just now)

So, I guess, rather safe than sorry:

How does one go about UNinstalling the hacks. I've got the JAILBREAK and the SCREENSAVER.

So I remove the screensaver first, hopefully, using the bin file in the hack-zip file and then remove the jailbreak similarly?

I THINK that my hacks are from this latest hack now available - well, I will be back if I can't figure it out (I hope I have the zip file that matches the hack that I installed.)

Can anyone confirm or deny if the 3.1 update breaks SSTimeOut 0.2 ?

(Jailbroke a 3.0.2, updated to 3.0.3 and installed SSTimeOut, usb, and screensavers)
