Which format is better to convert to mobi for the Kindle, .prc or epub if an ebook is not available in mobi format.

Thanks,
Carol

both go easily through calibre as far as i know.
i use mobipocket creator to make .prc files which i then convert to .mobi with Calibre. this way i get the all important chapter navigation and the .mobi is lighter than the .prc in size.
epubs i don't use much but i've read that the conversion is simple, as long as the file is well-formatted.

You usually won't need to convert .prc to read it on a Kindle (unless it's really, really old). Just slap it on the Kindle and enjoy!

Now-a-days, a PRC is usually a mobi wearing its Palm Resource Container hat.

just wanted to point out that i used PRC initially until i realised they occupy double the space of a MOBI file. so, if you have a lot of books, and want to save space, maybe MOBI would be better.

This is not a rule that I'm aware of, and I've certainly seen no evidence of it on my side of things. In fact, prc files that I do a mobi2mobi conversion on within Calibre always have the same file size.

I'm thinking that the prc's you're creating with Mobipocket Creator are being built with no compression. Then when you convert with Calibre, you're seeing the benefits of compression.

Well... there is, but only if you select it before going ahead with the build.

But why would you choose to create a Mobi book without compression?

One thing about prc files, besides being bigger, is they often tend to be formatted worse (no TOC and chapters anyway). Whereas they are almost always in epub files, which will carry over if converted with Calibre.

Are you talking about the Ebooks from Mobileread or .prc files in general?
