It's been suggested by business people that those using a coffee shop as an office-away-from-the-office should order something every two hours or else drop $5 into the tip jar. In theory, I'm okay with this. They sell the table to you, they sell the table to someone else: it's all good so long as they're making money. I just have a problem with what some coffee shops here (Taiwan) are charging for a cup of coffee. In the instances where coffee shops are being ridiculous about their pricing, I have no problem staying longer (there really isn't the selection of good coffee shops here like there is in, say, downtown Vancouver--which I discovered on a recent trip).
I like the idea of some coffee shops not even offering Wi-Fi in order to promote conversation, table turnover, and keeping pricing down. I'm also okay with some coffee shops offering Wi-Fi and charging more for the service. Just so long as there is an ample selection of both--and providing the coffee is good. Like I said before, it's coffee shops that want to distinguish between p-books and e-books that show their ignorance. |

I know that when my kids were small we ate at Taco Bell a LOT...it was the best bang for the buck. I assume it is the same for many.

But nothing close to a good home cooked Mexican meal. And nothing close to one from a restaurant, which was my point. Not to slam Taco Bell, but to slam McDonalds coffee.

Everything is a business model so if coffee shops start kicking out squatters then some other business will welcome them with open arms. One model not being explored is "the one who controls the access controls the transaction."

I am not a coffee drinker, but I am an avid tea drinker. I go with my girlfriend sometimes to coffee shops, and get tea (usually a chai or something, because most coffee shops stock very little tea), and we sip it. Hot stuff you cannot chug. When you sip something hot, it takes time. Reading helps fill the time while you are drinking, so you're not mindlessly staring at a wall. By preventing reading, you're having people not stay with their drinks, and in the end of I am not wanting something on the go, I'll not go to a place that only offers on the go. At that point the coffee shop may as well be a drive through, and just that.

I love Taco Bell! Of course it doesn't taste like the food in my face local Mexican restaurant, but it isnt supposed to. It tastes like Taco Bell. Five ingredients rearranged twenty different ways on tortillas. It even has lettuce and tomatoes for those who misunderstand the concept of fast food.
BEST: Nacho cheese chalupa. Meat and melted cheese food product in a hot greasy crispy thick flatbread. OMG! |
