Font, ScreenSaver & USBNetwork Hacks for Kindle 2.x, 3.x & 4.x

I know it's unsafe to upgrade hacked kindle to 3.1 but how about other way - applying patch to already upgraded kindle?
Have anyone tried this?

My pleasure! I'm glad it worked well for you. I now use Georgia exclusively on my kindle. At the third font size with the device on landscape it's almost identical to reading a real book.

Edit: OK, I think I figured it out. Kinddog's Regular adjustments get applied to both the Regular and the Italic ttf files; his Bold adjustments get applied to both the Bold and the BoldItalic ttf files. Yes?

Yes.. that's right, Rogerinnyc. Sorry for not making that clearer.
The heavy bolding transformation you do on the regular and italic fonts. The light bolding you do on the already bold fonts. And the verticl font size stretching you do on the bold fonts only, because for some reason they appear too squashed on the kindle screen if you don't!

Yes, my next task will be to try and find a classic roman font which is available under a licence that lets me modify it, and then I'll post the results up here. There should be something similar to Georgia available on linux etc.

There's no end of cool sci-fi looking fonts for kindle, but almost nothing for those of us who just want the thing to look as close as possible to a normal book.

In the meantime I've attached a pic of how my Kindle 3 now looks with the modified Georgia!

I read about the option to install new wallpapers

But I want to know if it can be to a Kindle3 with WIFI and updated to 3.1

you advise me? is it safe? I wait more time?

It might be best to wait.

Two things to consider:

If you upgrade to 3.1, you canNOT install the hacks and new wallpapers afterward.

But, if you first install the hacks/screensavers, and then install 3.1, you will NOT be able to remove the hacks/screensavers. You might want to. Some folks say it would invalidate the warranty.

If you wait, the experts might figure out how to allow all the options of installing and uninstalling the hacks.

Hi, I tried to update to 3.1 before noticing that it disables hack un/installations. However, the update didn't succeed (got a message about that after restart).

Then I went on and successfully installed a different hack (freedownload), which installed without any problem and worked. However, when I wanted to update this to ver. 0.2 I noticed that the Update option in the menu is greyed out.

I though I might need a restart and when the startup started, I got a really weird message about an error in an update (press R to continue). This didn't appear after yet another restart and everything seems to be working fine, version 3.0.3 is reported in the settings, but no hacks can be installed/uninstalled (Update option is still greyed out)!

I still have a working usbnet so I can access shell. Any tips about what might have gone wrong and what I could perhaps do?

The Kindle was bought as 3.0.1 and I updated to 3.0.2 and 3.0.3.

But now I detect very funny thing - while I cycle between mass storage and USBNet I see as if two different file systems mounted. That is, I copy something to kindle while in mass storage mode, then switch USBNet and the files are not there in /mnt/us (though the older ones are). Then I restart and I can see the files through shell, but when i go to mass storage and the files are missing. And not only that, two of my books either are or are not in a collection. Any idea what might be happening? Is there any temporary state that doesn't get committed? I am completely dumbfounded.

Thats fine. You're on 3.0.3 and nothing changed the OTA version at all which is expected.

Updates are made into a separate directory and only copied into the main firmware area when all the files have passed the hash check and all the patches have applied successfully.

Huh? That doesn't make any sense. When it is in USB drive mount, that partition is unmounted for the Kindle OS which is why it has USB drive mode as FAT isn't suitable for multiple devices to access concurrently. USB drive mode just exports the raw partition from flash to the computer so there isn't any extra staging area for changes.

You should scan the Kindle when plugged in with USB drive mode for errors or a corrupted filesystem.

Gah, I didn't even think to check here before I upgraded to 3.1. Hacking the Kindle was one of the very first things I did, and I'm so used to adding my own screensavers that I forgot it wasn't a built-in option. Now my "screensaver" is just a blank screen. Everything works fine, but I'm missing both the original and my custom pictures.

I guess I'll know better next time.

No idea how the chkdsk could have helped, since it didn't find any errors on the mass storage device, but it apparently did. All seems to work fine for now... Perhaps the freedownloader hack or something else messed the file system (?!)
(Before the chkdsk, whatever I put on the Kindle in mass storage was not visible from shell, but it was vice versa. To make it more confusing, files put on the mass storage and invisible in shell were visible again once reconnected as mass storage. The fat did not get updated?)

[OK, problem is back, again what i saved over the USB is invisible from Kindle. No idea what's happening And again collections reverted to the state they were in two days ago. argh!]

sorry for this question but I'm noob in this.
It is possible to add to JailBreak hack function (by JailBreak creator of course) to turn off automatic updates to avoid update to 3.1?
I only need JB and SS hack (and I dont want to mess with usbnetwork).
