I'm no overt fan of SB but they offer a nice place to relax, have a coffee and have friendly service (never had the sort of smugness many seem to need to project on the staff, hey they are just trying to earn a living fer goodness sakes in a fast paced workplace, people should cut them a bit of slack). In fact our local SB has often gone out of their way to make sure my orders are right or even come and ask if I need a refill, even if it's free. Every store is different and their coffee is not the best, TBH I do prefer the coffee at MickeyD's for some reason. But I have never run into any issues over ANYTHING at SB's. I prefer sitting in a SB's over that of a MickeyD's with the zillion sticky kids running around with their disease ridden hands touching everything... Just teasing, they don't touch everything.

Sat down and couldn't help notice the homeless guy barking like a dog a few booths down. McDonald's does draw that special clientele.

Still their coffee is not really special to me. I do not mind their Pike's Place roast as a general drinking coffee. But to me coffee is, well just coffee. I do enjoy their Awake black tea though, well it's Tazo Tea and as I remember SB bought them a few years back or something like that. |

I understand the office space argument and can see perfectly well how coffee shop workers should not be required to distinguish between all mobile devices. All perfectly fair.

That said, here in Brazil, carrying tablets in the bus is quite like an invitation for robbery. Which is why some smartasses developed the brilliant idea of carrying their tablets inside hollow books: they carve out a window in the book's pages where their tablets will fit. So, people thinking they are rightfully entitled to some reading while in a cafe, be it on physical or digital form, might give it a try.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but if a cafe/anywhere is going to offer free wifi, I don't feel it's necessary to buy anything more than one item while I'm there. I go to Panera to do my homework frequently. Sometimes I bring a laptop if I need it, sometimes I bring textbooks. I sit at one of the little side 2-people tables and buy a coffee or a chai tea and go to town. I'll be in there for a couple hours. I don't do this during lunch time, so I don't think it's rude.

And honestly, if you don't want people using your 'free wifi', don't offer it. Or put restrictions on it, passwords or something. I think I might start going to Chick-fil-a! I've never had their coffee, and they now offer wifi. |
