My eBookwise-1150 manages about 20 hours on a charge which does just fine for me. Better than an iLiad.

20h is not much as well in comparison to 1 week of Kindle and CyBook Gen3 or 2-3 weeks of Sony Reader.

But it's much better than any laptop. What kind of battery can one expect to find in an 1150 ?

BTW how frugal are the best of today's LCDs?

Sure.
However, eBookwise-1150 is a device from pre-eInk times. Why would I buy ebook reader with LCD screen and 10-20h battery life when I can buy eInk device that holds charge incomparably longer and has (imto ) a much superior screen?

I can easily get those kinds of times as well depending on how much reading I do

In the context of this thread I was remarking that LCD screens can last longer than 4 or 5 hours. I was not suggesting that e-INK is not a good technology. You have to read the thread to understand the comment. By the way, I do have a backlight and can read in the dark, so there

I have read the thread and my implication was that what is a point in investing in LCD type of ebook reader even if it has 20 hours battery life when today's eInk ebook readers have more than weeks?

How often is one away from electricity for weeks? That's what I've often wondered about "my battery lasts almost forever" remarks. IMO, if a battery lasts long enough to get me through whatever I'd like the device to do in a day, I'm not greatly discommoded if I have to charge it every night. Because in my dead average suburban existence, I'm never away from electricity for days on end, and since I don't think many other people are, either, what does extraordinary battery life really matter, in practice? It's like "this car can do 120 mph" when one never goes faster than half that, and half that is more usual.

It is annoying having to charge a reader whan you are reading a book.

And a lot of people travel to other countries without bringing chargers for their mobile phone and camera. They do not want to bother with converters and with bringing a lot of chargers. So in practise you can be away from electricity for weeks when you are travelling.

I won't buy e-ink because it doesn't have a backlight. I've said it elsewhere on this forum. There are plenty of us that feel this way, including the writer over at Teleread. I read at night, often in bed, and the lamp was always an annoyance for my wife. With my ebookwise or dt375 tablet, I have no problem reading at night. Plus, the battery is a non-issue for me. The ebookwise lasts pretty darn long. Like 1 and 1/2 weeks before I have to recharge. The dt375 is more of a hog, I have to charge it every other day or sometimes every day depending on how much I read or surf the web on it.

I want a more modern reading device with many of the features you folks are getting in your e-ink devices, except I want it with a backlight. I don't want to attach a light to it because the technology is there to have what I want. If I can't have that I'll just use my old ebookwise or dt375 until I can't buy them anymore. Also, please don't ask me what I did before I had my ebook reader - my wife suffered many years with my lamp and I don't see the need to go back to that, much like you don't want to go back to chugging a pile of books around or reading off a paper book. That's what this site is about right? Sometimes I feel as if the people here want to shove e-ink down our throats and don't want to listen to those of us who want an alternate device.

From my personal experience.

This Christmas I went on holidays. 8 days. From the moment I left my house till the moment I entered into my hotel - 18 hours. At least 2/3 of the time I was reading (the flight was 10h long, I didn't watch a single movie or TV show, I was ). I had no idea what type of electricity plugs they have in this country. Yes, I could investigate and find out and take the right adapter and my Sony power adapter (extra weight and cables)...but I didn't. I didn't need to waste my time and to worry about a non-existing problem. So, when I returned from holidays I still had 2 bars on battery meter. I didn't worry about getting stuck in the airport for a few hours or for a day? And for me that simple thing - I didn't have to worry - is one of the most important things, it is something I am willing to pay money for.

I appreciate the fact that there are different types of people. Someone likes Sony, someone likes Kindle. To each its own (c). I am just voicing my own preferences

Whatever works for you is what counts.

I often say: if you find a product that fits your needs, it will never be outmoded... unless you evolve.

Have a look here at this 'Words Gear'. I'm sure it's a good candidate for you. Post #7 for pics.

I don't tend to find it so. There's a plug near where I read (in the dark; I'm another of the school who sees no point to a reader without integral lighting), and I've sometimes read with the unit plugged in. The cord's long enough and doesn't get in the way. In general I just check the battery when I'm done with a reading session, and plug the unit in if it's low, so it's ready to go the next time I want it.

Just to add another seed to my rumour mill:

http://www.digitalbroadcasting.com/c...=773+r=001+l=a

It's only a tiny bit of sausage in the above article, but...

"iriver, the international digital device powerhouse, has chosen HWH PR/New Media to spearhead a major national PR campaign. Owned by global A/V force, Reigncom, Ltd., the brand is reemerging this year with an inventive and style-driven product line up of Multimedia Devices (MP3, MP4, PMP, Mobile TV), Network Devices (Home Media Center, Wi-Fi Network, Navigation products) and Content Devices (E-Dictionary, E-Book). The company, which currently dominates the Korean market and is prominent in Europe, is utilizing HWH to expand its market share in the U.S."

(Note the 'E-Dictionary, E-book' bit is mentioned).

I only post this because of the particular device this thread is about . I see it as iriver wanting to keep the hype that they achieved at CES 2008 flowing for all the products shown, but the fact that they actually make mention of 'E-Book' within their release may have some degree of significance in relation to said ebook reader device.

It's not much, if anything (this is just rumourmilling & hypothesising at its finest ), but I know there's interest in this device, so I'm just keeping an eye out for anything that might even marginally enlighten us with more info.

Cheers,
Marc
