That doesn't help a person avoid buying DRM'd books.

Amazon's non-DRM'd ebooks can be identified by "Simultaneous Device Usage: Unlimited."

Other stores that sell Kindle-compatible ebooks:
Fictionwise's multiformat books are non-DRM'd.

Baen's books are non-DRM'd.

Smashwords are non-DRM'd. (Some of those will feed to Amazon, and can be bought as Kindlebooks. But not all Smashwords books fit the criteria for the crossover sales. Possibly free Smashwords books can't go through Amazon.)

So I was incorrect about the DRM Topaz uses. But that still does not make Topaz a DRM format. Topaz is an eBook format.

It is both if one does exist without the other. I have never seen a Topaz ebook in the wild without DRM that has not been stripped by someone else.

So I agree it is an ebook format but it also seems to be a DRM format since no other type of book uses that encryption scheme and you can not buy Topaz ebooks without DRM, so the DRM format is an integral part of the that book format.

Topaz is not a DRM scheme. How many times do I have to say that? There is software out there to remove the DRM and leave the Topaz file DRMless.

Actually you can repeat that to your heart is content. That, of course, does not make you in any way more correct!

You picked on someone who said that Topaz was a DRM format. So I simply pointed out that since Topaz uses its own unique DRM format (it is not Mobi at all), and that you could not buy a Topaz book without DRM (unlike all other current book formats which can be bought with and wthout drm), that "technically" the original poster was correct.

You obviously feel otherwise. So we can then agree to disagree.

Therein lies the rub. I have ebooks from a number of sources and as soon as I import them to calibre, I have drm-free books. But I don't know what books have DRM originally and which ones don't unless I look at the file size and compare (I keep the original files).

That won't help with Kindle/Mobipocket files. They're the same size with DRM or with the DRM removed.

Hmm. In that case, I don't know how to know short of uninstalling my plug-ins.

Nah. I don't wanna know that bad. (meaning I don't want to put out the minimal effort required to do so!)

Hmm.. It should be easy enough to write something that will check whether and ebook is encrypted or not and report back. For ePubs (IIRC) it's the encryption.xml file, for Mobipocket it must be an offset in the header, adn something similar for eReader.

I've written a python script that detects ebook format, compression and encryption, along with a simple AppleScript wrapper for Mac users. See https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=121387

No, we cannot agree to disagree. Topaz is not a DRm format but is an eBook format. If Topaz was a DRM format and not an eBook, then when you stripped off the DRM, you'd have NOTHING left. When you strip the DRM from a Topaz eBook, you get a DRM free Topaz eBook. You cannot end up with an eBook if Topaz is a DRM format and not an eBook. I'm sorry you feel otherwise, but you are wrong.

Can someone else please let these delusional folks know that Topaz is an eBook format?

Actually, of course, it is BOTH.

The format only appears in TPZ0 ebooks from Amazon
The encryption only appears in TPZ0 ebooks from Amazon

It's reasonable use Topaz as the name for both the format and the encryption.

... not to mention, rather petty to be such a stickler about the distinction in the first place.
