Doesn't say much about you as you claim to be an iPad owner in your details and it doesn't say much about fact checking... the link goes to an app for 3G iPhone not iPad... however I love your innate sense of direction so that you always know which direction you're facing, must be useful in the wilderness... unfortunately not all are similarly blessed but it's good for a laugh...

naaaw man, the iPad is still a pretty spiffy bit of 'shiny'. I like that there are so many silly apps. I wonder if a group of people got together and really drilled down into the approved apps, how many do not fit inside the Apple rules for iOS apps. I suspect Apple does not care if the odd app with about 12 buyers does not follow the in app purchase option requirement. but once that app becomes popular the, Apple, drop the hammer sending Guido over to collect their protection money. Great racket if you can afford the muscle.

if you can see where the sun rises and where it sets along with which side of the abandon Starbucks Venti cup the moss grows, you pretty much should have a clue. Unless the sun sets in the south on your planet and it has no Starbucks stores. And given I've seen corners with two Starbucks stores with a grocery store on the other corner containing, you guessed it, a Starbucks so a planet w/o a Starbucks is simply hard to swallow, kinda like their coffee.

Ah but what happens if you're in an Ikea store (flatpack furniture stores in the UK and elsewhere) where the interior is deliberately designed to disorientate you so you can never find your way out... absolutely invaluable if you're stuck in the middle with no sign of daylight... and it's still possible to find places in the UK that are lucky enough not to have a Starbucks...

I would think any Muslim worth their Koran would know which way Mecca is.
after all, they've been doing it for many hundreds of years now without help from steve jobs.
BTW, I can barely find my front door but I guarantee that I won't be getting an app to help me.
Oh and iMecca will work on the ipad too, just like any iOS app.

Perhaps I am being too hard on the ipad. it's probably more the internet in general that bothers me. Lately I've been reading Nicolas Carrs' the Shallows and Sherry Turkles' Alone Together; they're making me very on guard about anything that could decrease my attention span or waste my time.
it just seems like the app store is a bottomless void of non-productivity.

No need to worry about junk apps; you don't have to buy any. Individuals determine their own productivity.

How about that! The Vatican says it can not be used and the Bishop says it can be used. What an opportunity for a new app. It will let you know what apps are approved by the Church, partially approved and exactly for what rituals and devotions they are approved - or not approved. Does that have your approval?

hey folks, we had been doing great in not bickering about the whole religion thing. It's fine to kid around about the app but lets not take ourselves too seriously here. It's just a tool not a religion, right?

We'll lose the thread, I self notified the board when I opened the thread just in case. I have no issue with it being moved or closed should it get even a bit contentious in here. Otherwise it's fun if we can all laugh at ourselves and let others laugh with us. Not every wisecrack is an insult, in fact it is only an insult if you want it or let it be such. A pretty smart priest, well smart is relative here (he will laugh at that one, trust me) I know told me that once. He was right and we all need to think about.

One of things to consider is that if you can manage yourself in the first instant when you feel insulted, just for those few brief moments, your brain will catch up and let you see things differently than anger and even let you see the humor in almost any situation.

but if everyone wants to head down that other road nobody can stop it so whatever you all want have at it.

Is the actual Vatican statement somewhere, the article you linked to sounds like an interpretation.

Here is another article:

http://www.nydailynews.com/tech_guid...phone_app.html

And, to me, it sounds more like the Vatican is just clarifying how the app should be used, and not actually condemning the app.

Just curious.

thanks for the links from me as well. They confirm what my initial understanding was about the creation of the app. It wasn't as if the developer just pulled it out of thin air but went the extra steps to make sure it was done well and seems from the heart. To me it's the irony of the low tech side of a church, any church, vs. the high tech and actually expensive devices like the iOS devices. Nice to read more of the background of the app.

In a way I thought of it as Turbo Tax for your sins. Run a few what-ifs then head off to face the music.

First thing I thought of when I read the article about the app was that if I'm sinning so much that I have to keep a checklist of what I am doing, then I'm not going to be the type of person going to confession in the first place.

Second thought was, there is no way on earth that I am going to be listing my sins on an electronic device that can either be lost, stolen, or hacked.

Seems to be a silly piece of software to me, but it did get its creator a lot of PR attention.
