If your Kindle 2 is perfect for you then it's great. For me it's not. Content in my native language (not English) is slowly starting to be published in the Kindle Store and in some places specific national characters are not displayed correctly on Kindle 2 and DX (they are OK on Kindle 3), yet these readers are listed as compatible devices for this content. I think changing that should qualify as fixing a bug.

Frankly I don't care about the social networking stuff, but I think that at least the extra language-support font updates should be pushed out, considering how many K2s there are out there and how long people have been clamouring (and hacking) for Cyrillic and CJKV characters.

And I'd appreciate an update if they made any improvements to navigation/Collections usability but don't particularly expect Amazon to spend much time improving that when they can push Clippy-like recommendations for "I see you've finished this book! Readers who finished this book also liked..."

The K1 did not receive much support after the K2 was announced. The K2 is not going to receive much support now that the K3 is out. That is the way of electronic gadgets.

I used to feel annoyed that K3 was getting actual page numbers while K2 was not... until I heard that the page number update forces you to click Menu before even the location values show on the screen rather than always visible as is on K2.

Funny, because I emailed them asking about the update and I was told that "We don't get any info on updates that our developers are creating for the devices, we find out about them the same time as it becomes public knowledge. Because of this, I'm unable to provide any hint as to whether this update will be made available for the Kindle DX or not. We are definitely not forgetting our previous devices and are always looking for ways to improve them."

What exactly did you ask them?

I don't believe this for one second. It's a joke. Second generation devices will never have 3rd generation software.

While that's most likely true...which kindles are 2nd generation and which are 3rd? The white kindle DX is compared to the white Kindle 2 and labeled specially as second generation. The graphite DX and the Kindle 3 are compared on each other's amazon page, so would that make all of then 3rd generation?

Easy... the devices that started life with 2.x.x software on them are second generation. Like mine (I never have been cutting-edge). The ones born with 3.x.x software on them... third generation.

Then why would amazon market the Kindle DX graphite as being equivalent to the Kindle 3? They have the comparison tables on their pages, the graphite DX is directly compared to an offered as an bigger alternative to the kindle 3

That's an interpretation on the part of the buyer. I'm not getting into whether or not Amazon is counting on that interpretation, but I just don't see it that way. I see a page comparing the three products that are currently for sale. Two of them are third gen. One is second gen.

The same way I felt when the K2 came out and got a bunch of useful updates while my K1 was ignored.

I don't even want to see the percentage xx% value. The progress bar is just fine. I am happy to see it after pressing menu!
I hope fo all K2 owners that there will be a similar update with a more crisp display (like for the K3), fast page turns (if possible) and foreign language support. I like the K3 shows all German characters (äöüß), too!
