The Kindle already does this so no. Put regular MP3s into the audible directory and you can play them in the audio book player.

Does that player have a way to select the order of playback and to pickup where you left off? (if you're using, say, a book made up of a dozen mp3 files?)

Yes. You can select any file you wish and it remembers where you were in each file. This all works with just regular MP3 files but it has to be via the audiobook player and the files have to be in the audible directory.

Well serves me right for trusting the users docs! I knew Audible type 4 was an mp3 file, but I assumed the wrapper was required!

This is neat! The downside is, it appears considers each file a book, and so if your book is 10 files, you'll have to listen to one go to the home screen, and select the next. It does remember your position in each file, but the only way to navigate appears to be to use the 30 sec forward and back...there's no ff or rew, and I don't know anyway to make use of Audible-type chapter breaks in .MP3 files.

But it works! This is neat! And you can put the book part files together in a sub-directory under audible for easier external management, the kindle seems to see them all flat.

And plus, I guess there is no reason why you couldn't put music files in the same folder, so Ticallion, there is your .MP3 GUI!

Still not as functional as a purpose built utility for music or book mp3s, but certainly a neat bonus.

Hmm yeah. Its not quite 100% if you're using MP3s then as you need to select the next file manually. Not sure how you do the chapter marks. I just looked at the Kindle user guide again and it does show Audible books as one massive file with built in chapter marks. Thats why the player is treating each file as a single book.

I wonder if there is anything that can convert a bunch of MP3s into something that the audiobook player recognises as a book with chapter marks.

Yup. The unfortunate limitation on organisation is the same for the audiobook player as it is for the ebook reader

The Audible format is proprietary and undocumented, and some Googling has not yielded any results, but this community has it's share of talented reverse engineers. I have several Audible books if anyone is up for it...anyone? Have hex editor, Will travel?

well, bummer!

i installed the 3.1 and not only don't i have page numbers, my locations have disappeared too! all i can see is the book percentage.

Thats odd. I click menu and Location blah of blah shows up at the bottom. Are you in the preface or something?

What happens if you do Menu -> Go to? Do you get the option to do a specific page?

ok, i should have been more precise

i do see the locations when i click the menu but not the page numbers.

also i think that before the update they used to show the total nr of locations at the end of that bar. wasn't it there?

because i can't see anything now, except the percentage (it's also possible i'm imagining things...)

should the wifi be on for the pg numbers?

Page numbers won't yet be available for all books - just some. You can tell if a book has page numbers enabled by checking its details on the Amazon website - if it gives a "page number print book ISBN" in the product details, the book has page numbering enabled. To get page numbering for books (which have it enabled) that you already own, you have to switch on 3G/WiFi and allow the Kindle to sync with the Amazon server - there's an additional file that needs to be transferred onto the Kindle for each book which has page numbers enabled. Some people have reported a few books that had to be deleted from their Kindle and then re-downloaded to get the page number file, but most appear to have updated simply by synching the Kindle.

Edit to add: Oh, and I just remembered something else I've read a few people report, and that's that some books have pages at the start of the book which don't have page numbers (things like title page, preface, foreword, etc) so you might have to page forward until you get into the actual book content before seeing page numbers when you press the MENU button.

Yes, wireless has to be on, your kindle has to be registered into the account from which the book was purchased, and the page files can trickle in a little at a time. So give them a few hours.

One quick way to tell if you're getting them is to plug your kindle into your pc and look for files with the .apnx extension.
