It is the same thing as about provider subsidized cell phones that are network locked. Once the contract has expired or you have paid the full price for the phone, the provider has a moral and in many countries also a legal duty to unlock it when the owner requests it. |

That is exactly correct. Both of those company's have become masterful at preying on the gullible and non-technical. If people actually knew what was being put over on them they would be livid.

I'm non-technical and am willing to pay for tech that does what I want. What do you see as "good" tech to buy in that case?

Funny, I just had a coffee in a local Coffee Republic, sat down to drink and have a read and a late middle-age couple sat down with their brand new iPad (straight from your Evil Apple). I asked what they thought of it and they were absolutely delighted, connecting to the net as we spoke and checking eMail etc. When I said I thought it was OK but missed a couple of things I'd like, their response was shame about that but it did exactly what they wanted, in a direct and simple way with no worries about tech issues at all... and it suited most of their friends and relatives...
So what was being put over on them?? Happiness, satisfaction, couldn't give a damn about tehnophiles opinions... whatever... |

I'm just waiting till the store based third party reading apps go away. Let's see how Apple gets on with that. Now is not the time to shit stir as Motorola is soon to release the Xoom and that could be an iPad killer.

The Xoom needs a cell phone data contract to use the wi-fi? That will kill it then and there if this is true. Also, the price does need to come down some. But then again, look how much the iPad currently is and how much more you get from the Xoom.

The iPad starts at $500, and I believe that entry level is the one most people buy. The Xoom doesn't offer anything without 3G. While it's true the prices of each are roughly equal when comparing the 32GB + 3G iPad with the Xoom, the next iPad is likely to be coming out soon and Apple has very little history of raising (or lowering) prices. This is what you really should be looking at as a comparison for its market success... and with the first iPad fairly close in its specs, it's easy to imagine the iPad 2 offering more value at a lower cost to many consumers. (Take note of the emphasis)
The fact that Apple offers a tablet that is $300 less than the Xoom, no matter how great the specs on the Xoom are is probably going to be the biggest thing that determines the market success of Motorola's tablet. It's going to be very hard to unseat Apple when it comes to tablets and while not it's not impossible, having an $800 entry level and a mandatory data contract is not the way to do it. |

And is that like all the other iPad killers from the last year or so????? I'd love to see some alternates that I can go and buy... guess we still wait...

not one company has stunted the growth of the iPod, iPhone, or iPad by presenting consumers with a longer checklist of features than Apple has. Even if the device was $399, there's just no evidence to support the notion that there can be an 'i' killin' that way.
Maybe it would be successful in its own right like the Android platform, but alongside of...not instead of. |

Apple did some unusual crowing about price when they released the iPad. They even threatened to cut costs to keep up with incoming competitors. I'm wondering if Apple has some hidden advantages that are making its competitors usual 'add more features AND rapidly drop the price' strategies more difficult in this case.

this looks good. I wonder if it would cause more defections from Apple than Android though.
