Well ... When King Ferdinand II conquered the Moors in Spain in 1492, he celebrated by adding 2 heraldic columns to his coat of arms - to represent the pillars of Hercules (modern day Strait of Gilbrater) with a ribbon draped around them.

This addition to his coat of arms morphed into a modern symbol.
What symbol did this heraldic commemoration become?
Extra credit: how did this transformation occur?

I read that as "conquered the Moons of Spain" clearly I've got astronomy on the brain.

Boy, my knowledge of Spanish history is about zilch! I don't have a clue unless it's something to do with Gibraltar being the symbol for an insurance company!

I think it must be the dollar sign - $

No idea how the transformation may have occurred though.

Well - SneakySnake got the right symbol - in its original form.

Bilbo got the right modern symbol - yes it became the modern dollar sign - anyone old enough to remember when it was still written with 2 vertical lines?

One theory on its adoption by the US is that Spanish pieces of eight were widely circulated in North America, and had the pillars of Hercules on one side of the coin. This symbol became recognizable as representing money.

So ... SS or Bilbo ... whoever gets here first ... take it away with a new question!
