my advice would be to try gray or night until your eyes adjust to reading on an lcd

Hope this helps and if something doesn't make sense please let me know and I try to explain it better.
Wow awesome! Night drastically improved the strain, I don't know if it's enough that I can read my normal few hours straight, but it's a definite improvement. Thank you!

oh you're welcome. It takes some people a little longer for their eyes to adjust. No rush enjoy what you can when you can. Before you know it' you'll be staying up reading all night

Unfortunately this is something you can't do on the stock B&N reader. You either have to root the device and install an app that has it or run nookie(Android 2.2 Froyo).

For some reason B&N has not allowed this feature on their stock B&N application. Ironically if you install their B&N 4 Android app it does have it.

I see from another post you like the night mode, which is a huge improvement over the default screen setting, the inverted will even be easier on the eyes. When I have a chance tonight I can show a sample of the inverted(b&w) if you wish.

Have you had your vision checked lately? I found that when I started experiencing eye strain when looking at LCD computer monitors/laptops that the strain was not from the monitor. Turns out I needed reading glasses.

Just an idea.

Wow that's nice too. And you had to root it to get that? I know rooting it means gaining admin controls to the OS, and I've read about how Honeycomb (?) is the best, but I'm not really sure what all that means? I don't want to completely change my nook?

Yes to be clear B&N stock reader doesn't support this simple color scheme. Ironically the android app dryi does. What rooting does was allow me to install a reader that could have this color scheme. namely, I use the kindie app and a reader called "Moon". Actually every reader on the android platform has this colour scheme.

No rooting will not change the look and feel of your device, just give you the freedom to install any app you wish and even change the look if you wish. For me I was already familiar with the android platform so the nook was a disappointment for me. I actually am running Froyo and I really love the device now. Honeycomb is great buyr it's not ready for the nook, when it's ready I will install it for sure.

I think the best way to describe rooting is that when you bought your device you logged on as a guest; after you rooted it, you logged on as administrator.

The OP cannot even read the manual and figure out how to turn down the brightness and use reader themes, you actually expect rooting to be an option? The stock night reader themes look almost identical to what you claim can only be accomplished by rooting.

OP, if you get a headache easily from reading on the LCD I think a night mode theme will probably make things worse as it adds too much contrast. I would try dark text on sepia and turn the brightness way down. The more dark background the more likely you will get reflections and thus more eyestrain. So I personally stay away from dark backgrounds and light text.

Right the OP is not good at reading the manual, but does a great job reading online directions. The good news is rooting directions are all online.

And no I don't expect the OP to root.

Do you remember the college years where one ofter heard the saying "Study under good lighting." The reason for that is simple this increase the contrast of the study materials to ease the eye strain.

I've never heard any medical advise recommend poor lighting and bad contrast, which is what you are recommending.

The eyes need contrast as that is what the human eye is good at detecting. The reason people often turn down the lights is because some peoples eyes are sensitive to light.

Darker surfaces absorb light where lighter surfaces reflect light. The statement you made really goes against scientific knowledge.

i've always been sensitive to bright lights. for my ebook reading black on white is just too harsh, i actually have to use red text and black background at a low setting. day reading is also at a low backlight and with a tannish/natural white bg with brown type. i don't think i've ever set my brightness to over 40% yet, though i've not read outside yet.

My suggestion:

Try it at home and follow your reading rituals as usual on different lights and conditions, even at bed. Some people say that altering the brightness help a bit, but on my particular case and several other friends, I cannot read for too much time without start having eye strain, even with my Galaxy Tab although is not as noticeable.

Rooting will not fix your eye strain issue but give you access to Android Market where you probably will find Android e readers which give you several background options or night reading mode (black background and white letters)

I use an eink device as a dedicated e-reader instead. It is the closest way to get a pbook experience.

I get headaches often from lights and I find I prefer to use the mocha and grey settings during the day. I use the night setting for reading in bed with my lights off. If I am going to be reading for a long time (like when one of my favourite authors releases a new book) I read on my classic nook.
