If the Daily is supposed to move the newspaper world into a new sphere, then there seems no reason why its content could not become more 'actual real news'. That should be its USP - it's supposed to be designed as a step up from a newspaper which by tradition has always been yesterday's news....

Well, first off, sorry I made a JEST about the whole thing. Unfortunately some here had their sense of humor removed at birth and can see it for the joke, somewhat based on history as well as a sort of pun with the GMO tag which I suspect many did not even know what it means or stands for. But the GMO tag was supposed to trigger the humor.

I for one was not bashing anyone, I was being sardonic or ironic or just playing around but perhaps it was a wasted effort.

I grow less enthused the more I use it. The app is in serious need of an update. It's SOOO SLOW.

The content is "not bad". I like that it brings me back into being a consumer of "general interest news" (as opposed to targeted RSS feeds). But the slowness is killing my interest.

That, and it needs a comics section to get me to subscribe.

And it only took 20 posts from the original topic to get an Apple bash in... way to go... shouldn't we be due an Evil Empire one too... couldn't we just leave the bashing to a separate bashing thread that the rest of us can duly ignore...

I don't think that this will succeed, based on the fact that most other general news sources (Slate, NY Times) that tried a paywall on the web ended up failing. I'm sure that many people will subscribe, of course, but I doubt enough will to make it profitable.

I do hope there was tequila involved. tequila makes everything much happier and fun. It has even been known to induce spontaneous nekkid table dancing among the female population. When that happens to a member of the male population it is just, well, unfortunate.

It's a friggin' connected device! What's the point in trying to emulate an old dying media when you can grab yourself in a few minutes a mashup of news from different sources, some online comic strips or webcomics, horoscopes for the weak and even some flash game rather than just crosswords or sudoku?!

You can even resize font or change layouts...

I'm always nervous by people saying that news is free. It isn't. It takes time and effort to gather the correct details, verify them, challenge and question people, find out details...

If you don't pay, someone else will. And the agenda of that person/people/company will stilt the news you get to what they believe is the truth or what they want to be the truth ("you provide the pictures, and I'll provide the war"). Without an ecosystem that supports the cost of news, we'll lose multiple views.

Whatever you think of the political colours likely attributable to the Daily, I'd rather have it succeed to show that you can support journalism. Success will (eventually) bring competitors and plurality of views.
