They sell the already mixed puree in all the supermarkets and street markets in Thailand. Makes it easy for people. Most folks keep an oil pot going all the time, so it's no problem to just heat it up and throw in whatever is for cooking that time.

None of it is (generally) associated with sweets here. In Oz, generally, "dessert" is not a meal that comes to mind when talking about pumpkin. It'd be a toss-up between soup and a Sunday Roast taking that spot, and certainly "savoury" in broad terms.

Oh, okay, I get it. Yeah, we just call those "butternut squash" here. All of those uses you listed sound yummy, as I don't particularly care for anything except pumpkin bread using pumpkin as a dessert. A lot of the butternut squash recipes we get here call for sweeter ingredients as well, like brown sugar or apple cider. I think it'd be much more to my taste on the savory side.

Just to clarify "butternut pumpkin"/butternut squash is just an example. The pumpkin you refer to as pumpkin we also call "pumpkin". That is to say "pumpkin" here covers a fair variety. Generally the only stuff we call "squash" you might put in the "summer squash" family.

Yes, and button squash. (Having googled a little bit, I saw that zucchini is considered a summer squash, which makes sense, but I've never thought of it so before. Learn something new every day.) He hasn't made it for a while, but The Loved One used to often make a zucchini, tomato, onion and garlic dish we called "ratatouille". I don't know if it was truly a ratatouille, but it was nice as a side with a good fillet of barbecued steak.

Your "ratatouille" sounds remarkably similar to what mom made, but I don't have a clue what she called hers. I love yellow squash.. I'll halve it and bake with butter and lots of black pepper, or bread it with cornmeal and fry it, or use it in my summer pasta primavera recipe (that one has every veggie I can find in it, plus angel hair pasta).

Eggplants are a very popular veggie here, and zucchini almost rare, so ours is mostly eggplant, onion, and tomato. I love it will extra olive oil (slutty rather than virgin as the olive taste is stronger) over Italian bread!
