There are a lot of "romance" novels on the darknet. It's an interesting contrast to the Sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, and almost all other books that would make it onto a top-100 list of a newspaper/magazine in any given week.

The wrinkle is that I had pre-ordered it as a Christmas present for my mother. I'm not sure, however, I can see a difference between that and just reading the pbook before wrapping it up; either way works out to 1 sale, 2 readers. --Nathanael |

Anyway, some people here seem to have very strong views on pirating. I'm not saying that pirating is justified; however, given the atrocities that happen every day I am surprised that people can get all worked up just because someone who is living on the other side of the world says that he is downloading pirated books as he can't get or afford them legally. Romance readers also have a slightly different mindset from those of other genres. I'm not saying it's a persecution complex, but I would bet that most older readers of romances have heard the phrase, "why are you wasting your time reading that trash?" more than once in their lives. ![]() Last edited by Xanthe; 02-05-2011 at 11:07 AM. |

Devices like the Fujitsu Snapscan make the paper->computer part easy for pbooks, and stripping drm form ebooks is, as I understand it, simple.

I'd not considered that reasoning, but I it does make sense. I think that's one reason the SF/Fantasy genre is also so developed. All the OOP books that have been lovingly scanned/typed/edited etc. stretching back to the turn of the century - so many of them collectibles now priced out of the hands of people who just want to read, not monetize.

Really? That's a pretty big shift in demographics over the last 10 years or so. When I first became aware of them it was mostly scifi books so I would guess it at mainly young males. I suppose that explains why there's no skinhead or hell's angels books floating around.

![]() I don't read romance books. I wouldn't know if they are out there or not because I never searched for any. I just did individual searches by title or author. There was no shortage of any genre. |
