I use a PRS-350. The first question I'm always asked is "Is that a Kindle?"

I guess it's payback for when everyone with a portable music play was asked "Is that a Walkman?" |

				Why convert someone?

Why should I try to convert anyone to use ebooks instead of printed books?

If someone shoots at people with automatic weapons in a supermarked, I think they should somehow be converted to not doing so, but otherwise... I can share the personal pleasure I get from from listening to Beatles records or listening to "Le Nozze di Figaro" with Schwarzkopf from 1961. I will not try to convert you to get pleasure from any of it, unless you so desire. |

				I tend to agree. . .

I'm no longer interested in 'converting' people. They will either come to this technology or not. Shoot! the technology itself will survive only if it meets the needs of more people than who are currently using it now.

If it CAN'T meet those needs, then it doesn't really deserve or need to survive. eBooks work for me, but I'm willing to consider alternatives. |

I had a conversation with a clerk in Staples, an office supply store, about the Kindle. They sell it there and I told the clerk I had one. He said he liked "real books." I said, "Yeah, when books came out, there were people who said, "I really like the feel of a scroll in my hands.'" Then I demonstrated reading from a scroll. He and others around laughed. Hopefully, humor made the point as he later admitted the screen on the Kindle was way easier on the eyes than an LCD screen and more like a paper book.

Electronic readers are still new technology and will people have to go through the "resistance to change and the new" psychology. In time, the average person will accept them. But then, the Luddites will always resist. ![]() Dean |

LOVE this response. I have a stock answer now that goes along the lines of "I really used to prefer cuneiform tablets, but they took so long to fire in the kiln, that ereading is more convenient". Then when they ask me about cuneiform tablets, I bring up the wiki article that I have loaded on my reader. They start to look at my 650 in a different light after that.

When the issue of "I like to read real books" comes up I tell them I have not given up "real" books and that I like to read.. period. Sometimes I like holding the tome of paper and sometimes I don't.

I prefer the convience of the small platform of the reader as it fits in my coat pocket. I am more likely to carry it with me than that 1000+ page novel I am reading. E-Readers allow us the convience of having more books on hand in a smaller form. It does not take from the pleasure of reading, it enhances it. Personally my house is still full of books because I love them as much as my reader. |

The ones that annoy me are the ones that bring up e-reading so they can insinuate that I, personally, am responsible for the decline of bookstores. Of course these are the same people who do their book shopping at garage sales, second hand stores and book swaps and buy maybe two books a year at those same cherished bookstores. I guess my true offense is that my full-price e-books aren't available to feed their "four for a dollar" book habit.

When I get the "I prefer the feel of real books" response I like to show them my leather Nook Color cover and reply with, "Cool, I like the feel of leather myself." And the whole, "I prefer to read real books" always ends up with me asking them how many books they have, at which time I reply that I can carry ALL of their books on this device, and that I can essentially fit their entire library in my pocket.
