I would suggest looking into either of these if academic use and PDF rendering is important:
The Entourage Edge (comes in pocket, or big screen version. Sold through bestbuy.com and other online retailers) https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75406 or The Notion Ink Adam (Pixel Qi screen version) http://www.notionink.com/features.php I believe that both are listed at $500 |

Hi-
I'm a physics grad student, so I'm also reading pdfs with lots of math equations. Overall, the kindle dx doesn't do so terrible on showing the math equations- although if there's a letter beta in the text it screws that up (I've been in touch with their tech support over this.) Part of it depends on whether you're looking at image pdfs or text pdfs. Image pdfs can be slow to load and slow to turn pages, but again, I find it usable. I've heard that the pocketbook 902/903 is slower, but don't actually know firsthand. Text pdf's (like journal papers) are pretty snappy. The downside is that the kindle doesn't support links- or even a linked table of contents- so navigating in large documents can be hard. You can put bookmarks, but those only tell you the page number (in the pdf), so you're stuck wondering if the bookmark on page 207 is the start of chapter 6 or chapter 7. For text pdfs, search also works, but it can be pretty slow. Hope this helps! |

I would be cautious with the Notion Ink Adam, at least for following months. The few people that received their orders already, have complained a lot about the screen, operating system and even how some app works on it. And this have been posted on different and several portals, so I don't think is an isolated case.
Anyway, just dropping my 2 cents, the Adam is a expensive device and not even shipped from USA, so people should be aware of those kind of issues. |

I would say with the Motorola Xoom release looming large this month, that would be something I would put on my 'check it out" list.

I think the problem here is that the op doesn't want an lcd, but wants the best possible pdf rendering with a large screen. For example, I wouldn't normally recommend the Entourage Edge to general book readers or tablet enthusiasts, but it does make sense for academic purposes. And the other device, the Adam, solves the lcd screen issue with the Pixel Qi display, and offers a tablet interface that shoud make pdf viewing, annotating, etc. better. However, as jocampo pointed out, quality control is still a big question mark. It's tough when the criteria are this limiting, but I understand that sometimes we have specific needs. |

![]() Just take the pros and cons, check your budget and buy one. There is no perfect ereader you just need to give priority to what you expect or want and you will be more than happy with it. |

On the PocketBook 902 the annotations is done in Notes and uses the 4-way key to highlight the selection.

My PB 602 is pretty nice so I think you'll like the 902. My guess is that you'd want the pocketbook 903 with the touchscreen for annotations? Is that available yet?
The nice thing about the PBs is that you can expand the memory to 32gb with micro sd cards which is nice because .pdf files take up a lot of space. I filled up 16gb in no time. |
