You just bought a Nook Color and want to root it

Not for the faint of heart, but I wanted to share my rooting experience, from version 1.0.0 to 1.0.1, rooting with Auto-Nooter 2.12.25, and then applying the 1.1.0 update. As a brand new owner myself, I was looking for a comprehensive guide with just enough hand-holding to keep from bricking the thing. I hope this compilation helps someone. It took about 2.5 hours to complete the process, though subsequent updates will most likely take about 10 minutes with everything set up. Thank you so much to all the developers involved in getting this to work!

If you are on version 1.0.0 as I was, here is the official NC 1.0.1 update:

The beef of the project: The Auto-Nooter 2.12.25 instructions

For step 2 on the above site, see the link below for instructions on using WinImage. Use steps 3 through 8 on this page, substituting the image file with the one you downloaded above. I used Windows 7 for this step, and I had to run WinImage as Administrator in order to see the microSD drive.

(This page also has instructions on how to get ADB up and running.)

For step 17 on the Auto-Nooter 2.12.25 instructions page, instead of re-installing YouTube, all I had to do was use the ES File Explorer (from the Market). Hit the menu button to the right of the normal Nook arrow and half-circle, select Manager | App Manager | YouTube | Detail, then both clear the cache and data. YouTube then fired right up.

Instructions on how to update to the 1.1 version:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=932145
When they mention Clockwork Recovery as a pre-requisite, they mean use ROM Manager (free in the Market), then hit “Flash ClockworkMod Recovery”. When in recovery, here’s a tip: use the volume buttons on the side to navigate up and down. The “N” button selects an item. You’ll need to back out of the menus, returning to the first menu to reboot properly.

Good luck!

FYI - there is a new version of autonooter that can be used on a NC w/ 1.1 that is unrooted, so if someone purchases a NC that already has 1.1 installed ... just download the updated Autorooter and flash the your uSD and unroot the NC ...
