Growing up in Pennsylvania, anytime snow/ice was forecast, everyone went running to the stores to stock up on bread and milk. The stores were very crowded even if only a few inches of snow was forecast. I have to say I don't miss the ice storms we used to get in Pennsylvania. Give me a 2 feet of snow any day. At least you can shovel it out of the way.

I have never understood the bread and milk thing. The only thing I can think of is that they provide carbohydrates and protein that doesn't need to be cooked, but there are plenty of other options for that.

I'd take that over bread and milk any day, in case of a huge blizzard. Bread and milk only stay good for a short time, but tinned goods will stay good for a very long time.

My emergency food supplies consist of ready-to-eat products. I don't even bother with cooking, so I don't have to worry about that. I have ample supplies of canned goods: vegetables, fruit, tuna, sardines, hash, chili, soup, etc. I also have beef jerky, assorted crackers, nuts, dried fruit, candy, cookies, granola bars, energy bars, and lots of bottled water.

This is more than adequate for several days without power and avoids the hassle of trying to cook a meal.

Wow, no one thought to have a battery operated solar or wind up radio handy? I only lost power got about 10 mins during the blizzard last night and the wind up radio was the first thing I reached for after the flashlight. Sure you can contact people with a cell phone but the radio is useful for official announcements about stuff.

I'd like to add another point:

make sure your car is filled to the brim. You can use your car radio if you absolutely need to listen to the radio! You will also have an extra source of electricity.

Ahh, my ipod doesn't do that but the windup/solar radio has come in handy for me.

Ditto. It may not be my favorite food, but at least with some sort of protein I won't start to feel malnourished.

Every summer I stock up. I discovered Stagg Chili is so good, I can eat cold. The only place I know that sells it is Costco, but since I never go there anymore, I just order it from the Hormel store.
