Here the doctor doesn't take the blood, she just orders the test. I have to go to a pathology place, and a pathology nurse takes the blood. It is a starving test, so nothing to eat or drink after dinner (which i will have at 10.30pm tonight!) the place opens at 8.00am and it is first come first served. last time i got there at 10 minutes to and was still number 7 in line. We all complained about being hungry until it was each person's turn. when you are done you skip off gailly saying you are off to breakfast grinning at the still starving patients in the waiting room.

That's actually a good thing. I hate it when a doctor has to use a needle. They just don't usually have as much practice as the nurses, and especially a pathology nurse or phlebotomist! Those folk are almost painless! Still scary, but almost painless.

That's fast! There is usually a two+ hour wait at each test clinic in this hospital. If you have 3-4 different tests, it's an all day affair. That's why I didn't tell them I could speak Japanese. I came in at 10:30, saw a doctor for manual exam, then four different tests including EKG and X-Rays, and out by 12:30! I'm never going to let my wife come with me ever again!

That might be the only enjoyable part of the whole test!

Ooh, I could tell you some horror stories about nurses taking blood. One time a nurse told me she couldn't find a vein, because mine are 'slippery and tiny'. She actually tried to take blood in my tumb I swear I could hear the needle scraping against the bones in my thumb. At that point my mom stepped in and angrily demanded someone else take my blood. They called the doctor, and it took him about 2 seconds to find a vein and stick the needle in.

But I'm sure you'll be fine SneakySnake

I have had lots of problems with having blood taken in the past, to the point of needle shock and fainting. But I am pleased to say that the pathology nurses at this joint do a good job. I just have to remember to mention how the one that got it right did it! I am still scared. My veins are not that easy to find and they sometimes stop. here's hoping they don't need much. I am making myself sick with worry now And I failed my blood pressure test today!

Next week it will all be over and I will pass the blood pressure test and everything will be OK again! *deep breaths*

Hahhh, finally there's at least another person who has suffered from the nurse's ability. My story went like this: I was about 13 yrs old, and suddenly had Dengue fever. Yes, I had to go to see doctor then. And yes, the doctor had to take some blood of mine to do all his crazy tests. That part was fine. When he came up with the decision to do the intravenous therapy (which we human usually call 'drip') - this part wasn't fine The doc can't even manage to locate any vein on either of my arms So he kept on tapping on an arm of mine, and tried to inject into the right vein for several times He had to take 3 breaks from torturing me (and maybe himself) and thank God, he made it at the 8th attempt.

Situation:
In my late teens I had to have some blood taken from my finger tip. The nurse insisted that she take it from my left middle finger.

Problem:
In those days I was playing 5-8 hours of guitar every day. The calluses on the finger tips of my left hand were thick sheets of dead skin. I tried to tell this to the nurse but she insisted that she had to use my left hand. I guess the blood in my right hand is different...

Result:
She hammered away with her lancet again and again and again, squeezing my finger until it was blue trying to get a drop of blood to appear. Finally she took a needle and used that because it could go deeper. My finger was like chopped meat by the time she was done, all because she insisted that she had to draw from the left hand...

Observations:
There are some really stupid people on this planet in positions of authority.

Yeah, I also don't really like the super wide monitors. 16:10 I find OK, but 16:9 i more of a hassle: with a taskbar and a decent pane on top you have almost no place in the middle...

Try some soothing music, meditation, think higher thoughts, and then take a healthy slug of some exotic cocktail. Repeat once.

Works every time.
