I became completely spoiled in Germany with bread. I go out of my way to get good bread here. I have a good friend who shops at a pretty fantastic market in a town called Poulsbo about 45 minutes from here. he goes once a week and I have a standing order for a bread that is essentially bauern brot. I get it every other week, they are just like the loaves in Germany, quite large!

Mr M loves to sit on top of the backrest behind my head, though not to lick himself. He has discovered that womping me around the head with his tail is fun! The other night he even turned around and assumed a position (leg down) in order to womp me more effectively. he particularly likes it when I catch his tail and he has to wrest it free from my grip to start womping again!

yes, Strider and I do that, I call it the tail whacka game ;o)

Civil unrest (floods too) and rioting tends to bring out the worst in some people.

There is NO good bread here. NONE! Years ago there was a Swedish bakery about 15k away, but it closed down as the locals wanted white bread with the crust cut off. In the supermarkets you can find 20 different brands of white bread, packaged in different slice thicknesses, and something that they 'call' French bread. It's softer than the white bread...

There are a lot of bakeries these days, but they don't make many breads. Mostly sweet rolls, sweet croissants, sweet breads, and pizza. Sometimes even that is sweet. Oh... and white bread. I saw what I 'thought' was a peasant loaf... round, unsliced, top slashed and sprinkled with corn meal, but when I picked it up, my fingers sank in half way. Bummer.

I have a small forced hot-air oven, which can make some breads, one loaf at a time. But I'm not much of a baker, and there are some breads, such as a really good Jewish Rye bread, that needs to have old stale rye bread included into the sponge in order to get the best flavor. It also needs to be baked on a stone, rather than in a pan. Breads are the one food group that I just can't replicate properly, not and do them justice. I can make 'some' breads, but none that would make a French or German bakery worry about losing business...

One of our two cats will not clean his nails (much). I often have to remove huge clunks of clay from them. (our clay is such that if you simply walk on top of it, you'll grow inches...) The other will clean his nails very fastidiously.

We have that kind of bread here too. I wouldn't buy it. And the only white bread we buy is for the tosti.

Most (larger) supermarkets here have flour from the mill (local products). For various types of bread... But I don't like the sourdough bread much (which is what is eaten mostly in Germany)

Edit:

And I forgot to put my own rant down:

I should have stayed home, I'm not feeling too well...

One of my German colleagues relocated to Slovakia a while back. When I last visited him there, he was telling me that the thing he missed most about Germany was the bread. He was bemoaning that fact that he just can't get the same variety or quality of bread in Slovakia.

San Francisco is famous for sour dough bread that melts in your mouth. Maybe you could get the recipe and share it with your Japanese friends.

A lot of Egyptians seem to agree. The last I heard, some of the protesters had taken to standing guard around the vandalized sites to prevent a recurrence. If they catch the thieves, no one may ever find the bodies...

If it's not cake from a mix, and ultra sweet, they don't want to bake it. Besides, the only ovens the Japanese use are part of their microwaves, usually not even large enough for a 9" pie plate. Brownies and pound cake, or nothing. I don't know one who would even think to try making bread. We have the largest microwave we could get, and it just takes a 9" plate. To make anything larger, such as a loaf of bread, I have to use my forced hot air oven, and even then, 11" is a big as I can go.

Maybe you can start a trend, open a REAL(tm) bakery and find something to occupy your time.

I just got back from a Gloria Jean's coffee shop, and I was satisfied with their service. The staff was active and nice, always smiling. The price is a bit high for me, but with the delicious chocolate drink I think I'll come back.

ah, and the best part was: they offered whipped cream, 4 kinds of syrup, chocolate powder and chocolate sprinkles for free!
