Embarassed to be Carting Around a Hardcover Book?

Someone recently suggested I read "Crawlspace," an older horror novel available only in hardcover. Someone else suggested I read Crash of the Titans, which is $14.99 in ebook form. So, I reserved both in Hardcover from the library. Now, Crawspace is probably better read late at night, but I am really into Crash of Titans, and don't think I can finish it today. So, do I lug it back and forth or do I read something else on the train? Aside from the physical discomfort, I have been such an ereader proponent, it feels kind of disloyal.

I almost never read books on trains or anything of the sort. I usually go for something light and frivolous like a magazine or a newspaper or listening to something. I envy your ability!

I bet you don't take trains twice a day. I have (1) watched movies (2) knitted and (3) read books. The only thing I haven't done (which I see done a lot) is put on make-up!

Actually I get more weird looks reading an ereader than a real book. Most people that I know in Cincinnati have not truly migrated to the eBook yet.

Read the book! If you attract anyone's attention it will be because literacy has become such a rare commodity these days!

Uncomfortable, yes (I much prefer paper back or my Kindle to a hardcover). Funny or disloyal, no! Reading is for your enjoyment, so if you are in the middle of a hardcover, so be it.

Knowing me, if someone gave me an odd look that really bothered me, I'd probably say something like "Its a book! Try one!"

Today, for the first time, I saw a fellow reading an ebook (Kindle) as he walked past me on the sidewalk! I don't often read an ebook on the bus; audiobooks drown out conversatios where I don't care to be a captive audience! I read ebooks on trains and planes, though no one has ever asked me about my device yet.

As for the thread topic -- why on Earth would I feel "embarrassed" about reading a hardcover book? Many of the books on my TBR pile are only available that way.

Oh yes me too. Its getting a little annoying having to school people on what a ereader is and what it does.

Then at times they will ask what I'm reading, trying explain this is quite difficult at times and only leads to more inane questioning. Only to finish by saying they don't like reading!!

It has been about a year since I picked up a pbook and someone lent me an Iain Banks novel in paperback.

I had forgotten how heavy those damned things were!

I don't like to carry around hard cover books because of weight. I would probably save those to read at home.

I would not feel funny or embarassed at all. At least people know what it is. I am starting to dread the questions about my K3 when I am trying to read. "Isn't that one of those things?"

If you can stand the annoyance of reading a hardcover book in the train (I always hated it), then do. I've never really cared what others thought of me, so, my answer to your question would be no. Besides, I've seen so many ereaders in the wild, that the question should have been "do you feel funny reading an ebook?"

I do almost ALL of my reading on my Nook, but for the odd book here or there (usually a Japanese text or novel), I still carry a book around. I don't feel odd about it, I only feel the loss of convenience to myself.

I see quite a few of them, but that may be due to my profession. I spend all my time in my lawfirm with other attorney's, many of whom love their e-readers. I've actually heard some of them chatting about how they can read, er, unseemly books now and no one has any idea because all they see is the pretty e-reader skin. There is a distinct lack of dimestore fantasy and boddice ripper covers now.

Before I got my reader I always carried a book for any length of journey, and if I have a physical copy of a book thats not on my reader I still wouldn't hesitate to take said book, I am proud to be a reader tbh
