I read F & SF, most of which is written in series, or set within an internally consistent universe. I've been a regular library user all my life and got really fed up with not being to read a series in order "Oh yes, that's book 2, book 1 is in a library 20 miles away and book 3 is even further, would you like us to order them in for you at £1 each?".

With my Kindle, unless it's something I particularly want, I don't bother with it unless the series is complete. There are plenty of completed series out there to keep me busy for the rest of my life - and more being finished all the time.

I've already got more on there than I'll read in the next 2 years.

As soon as I heard ereaders were on the market I wanted one. I kept up to date with e-ink technology and read anything I could on ebooks. At one time I was even a contributor to Teleread. But could I get an ereader in Australia? Nope.
I had just decided to buy an ereader in from overseas when the Kobo arrived in Borders. Even despite getting a "lemon" with my first unit I persevered and got a replacement. Now I use it all the time, have magazines via Calibre. It's crammed with books, magazines, lecture notes.
I will NEVER be without one again and am only annoyed that I had to wait until I was old before they were invented! (And another device that was "previewed" by Arthur C Clarke - although I think he was imagining something like the IPad about 40 years ago).
I simply chose that I "read a lot" in this survey, but it's so much more than that.

lol at "all the ladies." Have you gotten a lot of dates with your Opus?

As for me, my library is closed for 2 years for renovations, and I was having library book withdrawals. Luckily they have a good ebook selection.

I have been a book addict since 7 years of age! I love the concept of having all my current books with me, ready to go in such a handy little package. I also read PDFs - I am a student, and read articles for classes. Got tired of all those piles of paper. Loving my kindle! Even the worse scanned in PDF's the teacher can produce on the college website is readable with the contrast and zoom features.

None of the above. I was tired of having to come up with new places to stash my books.

Well the thing is I love new technologies and I love reading as well. The truth is I've wanted one for a long time but it seemed the devices were not mature yet and I just stopped thinking about it until the end of 2010 when I heard about the new models with decent lasting batteries and e-ink so I thought what the heck, let us give it a try.

None of the listed topics were right for me. I wanted the convenience of being able to take lots of books with me when I travel. I have withdrawal symptoms just at the thought of having nothing to read. I just wish our local library would go into ebooks, but I live in rural Western Australia and it ain't gunna happen soon.

I love to read. Always have.

I've had the Kindle on my wishlist for years but kind of worried I would over spend on ebooks. When K3 came out, my sister surprised me with one. I quickly discovered the endless supply of legal free ebooks and now actually spend much less on books.

An ereader will literally pay for itself in short order. Had I known, I would have had one years ago.

I also picked up an e-reader before e-readers were "cool".

The main reason I picked one up was for the convenience of having all of my books in one place. I am a frequent traveller and love being able to take all of my books with me on trips.

The e-reader really came in handy when traveling overseas to Germany. I had a difficult time finding a lot of books written in English. Having my Kindle allowed me to download books while I was in Germany and read them within minutes. Before the e-reader I would have needed to pack many English fiction books in my suitcase.

There is an option missing: No more room for new books.

I wanted to be able to read Project Gutenberg in bed. Now I can.

Also, the pbook population has become a serious issue. When we moved last fall, there were over 70 cartons of books ... I'm actually not entirely sure how many more than 70, because that's when I gave up counting. Probably close to 100 cubic feet of books, which doesn't sound like a lot until you're trying to find shelves for them. Six months later, we're still using some boxes of books for furniture (and some cartons of SF paperbacks for a railing) because we don't have anywhere to put them out of their boxes.

Most of the books I like to read are out of copyright. So rather than paid $20 a pop for printed versions, I could buy a Kindle and read them all for $139.

Indeed, the day I heard about the K3 I was in the process of ordering $60 worth of PD books from Amazon, so in a way it only cost me $80. (And in case anyone wonders, it was a couple of Abraham Merritt's works and one of Robert Howard's)

Still, as much as I like the K3, I don't think I could have stood previous versions of e-ink. The contrast is just barely acceptable with pearl (have to use a lot more light to read than a regular book)

Wrong poll! It should have been a multipe response one!

1. It's a gadget, and I do like gadgets
2. Device one: Ease of use, when I started reading electronically, I went by train on a daily basis. A small device is easier than a book.
3. Device two: I want a bigger screen.
3. Device three: Hey, new technology, I need to try that too
4. Device four: My mother bought one and in order to help her better when she has problems with it, I need one of my own.
