There are several apps to choose from that read epub files. I'm most familiar with Aldiko and Moon+ Reader. There is no last page reading symbol, but many place shortcuts to the books they're currently reading on their homescreen. You have to use a homescreen replacement (launcher) for this. The stock homescreen doesn't allow this. The "continue reading" icon is only for the stock reader.

The apps allow for more customization than the stock reader. They are a step up not a step down.

Thanks Scion (again, lol). I probably already read this since I have read through most of the rooting sub-forum already, but do you loose all of your books and shelves after you root?

Maybe I should just go get a stupid micro sd and reader/adapter while here. It is probably cheaper than at home.

No, you don't lose your books and shelves. If so, that would stop many from moving forward.

I have another question, lol. Ok, so do you have to mess around with all the book covers to get them to show up with a reader app after you rooted your NC? I don't want to bother doing that (cause it is a serious pain in the ass as I have a lot of books) if it won't matter once I root. It is a different reader, so I was thinking things would show up differently.

Yes, different readers will probably be MORE compatible with your .epubs w/o messing around with covers.

Although rooting won't mess up your shelves; if you use a different reader, your shelves for the B&N reader will be meaningless. So I wouldn't spend too much time on those if you thing you might end up w/ a different reader.

I read my sideloaded .epubs w/ Aldiko; and my B&N purchased content w/ the B&N app. Although I generally remove drm; I enjoy the convenience of the B&N reader for content purchased from the B&N store.

Alright. Going to root it eventually. I just don't know when I will have time, so I am not going to bother doing more shelves. I hear the Aldiko reads B&N drm so I might just use that one.

I went to SquareTrade with a 30% off coupon and bought a warranty too.

I just posted something similar another thread:
When I copied a library book onto the NC, opening it through "library" vs. through "keep reading"/drop down menu on the home screen gave different locations. Annoying, but basically once I open a sideloaded book through one method, I always open it that way, and it always returns to the last page read. Clear as mud?

I have 1.01, BTW, and an unrooted NC.

What about if you've been accessing your book via the "keep reading / drop down menu," but when you go to access it again it's no longer in the drop down menu. The menu only displays three sideloaded books. If someone browses a few books (for whatever reason) or unintentionally opens a book, it's easy to push your "currently reading" books out of the drop down menu. According to what you're saying, you would not be able to pick up where you left off because accessing them via the Library now will yield a different location (most likely the books cover).

Yep. If you open another book and try to open it from the drop down menu it will go to the cover. But I try to find my spot via the drop down and then it will keep that spot until i open. another book.

About the NC not being recognized by your computer. I attended a tutorial class on the NC at my local B&N this past Sat. The lady teaching the course mentioned a problem with some of the Power/USB cables having connection issues. It was suggested that you check with the staff to see about checking the cable with a known good one to determine if that was the source of the problems.
I wish you well on solving your problems.

Thanks for that. I wish those at the B&N I was at knew about this. I did talk to the store about it and the 1-800 number and nobody mentioned this. I am back in Canada now though, so hopefully it will work most of the time.
